Dear Friends in Adventure,

I hope that each of you is well and enjoying a fantastic year.

Our trip down the Chatkal River, in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, is the fifth in the Sobek Signature Series—resurrections of the classic Sobek trips of yore—and the first of two offered in 2008. It is a whitewater wonder, in a class with gems like the Coruh (Turkey), the Bio Bio (Chile), and the Zambezi (Zimbabwe). It flows through five remote canyons in Central Asia’s Tien Shan Mountains and features numerous Class V rapids, as well as unparalleled scenery and rarely visited villages. This 10-day trip will be run twice in September, and after each trip you’ll have a chance to visit the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, replete with palaces, mosques, and madrassas.

We’ve scheduled the Rufiji River, number six in the Signature Series, as December and January 2008-09 getaways to the tropical warmth of East Africa. This river, which bisects the vast Selous Game Reserve, may lack whitewater, but it more than makes up for it with plentiful wildlife. In the shadows of the riverine forest, the animals come to the water to drink, and to delight us with surprise sightings as we drift quietly around a bend. We take advantage of the cool mornings and evenings to penetrate the narrow band of forest and emerge onto the great savannah in search of more close encounters of the fauna kind. If you hanker after the big game, avoid the madding crowds of the big parks and float with me on the quiet waters of the Rufiji!

The contrast between the contemplative pace of the Rufiji and the rollicking ride on the Chatkal could not be greater. Whether you want the excitement of Class V whitewater or the gentle thrills of a float through a wildlife paradise, we have the trip for you.
