In the continuing tradition of floating salons I’d love to invite you to join my 13-year-old son, Walker, and me and other friends on a special R&R (Raft and Relaxation) adventure to Brazil with Mountain Travel Sobek this July. Deep in the heart of Brazil, in the state of Tocantins, is a desert oasis called the Jalapão, a prodigiously spectacular wilderness of translucent jade-green rivers, waterfalls, freshwater springs, yellow sand dunes, and 3,000-foot sandstone plateaus. It’s a brilliant setting for adventures of all sorts: we’ll explore the environs on a three-day rafting trip down the Río Novo, a clear warm-water river with spritely rapids and comfortable camps on virgin sandy beaches where we’ll bask beneath the tropical night. We’ll swim in hidden lagoons (water so clear you can see the Equator), play in the myriad waterfalls, and cure the color blind with the brightly winged birds, including the rare Brazilian merganser. We’ll also visit the remote community of Ponte Alta, where the women have the talent and the patience to turn blades of grass into gold with their traditional weavings and handicrafts. Our adventure begins and ends in Palmas, Brazil’s fastest-growing city, but if you wish, take an extension to Río de Janeiro, rightfully known for its beaches, bikinis, and samba. Or, venture to the world of the Amazon rainforest with a stay at Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge. See the detailed itinerary for more information. I specially designed this for families, suitable for kids from 8 to 80. The river is safe for the kids to play in and swim, with warm and clean water; the waterfalls are just amazing, with views of golden grasses and sand dunes. The trip includes two nights at a hotel in Palmas, and fairly basic camping along the river. Summer offers the nicest weather in Brazil with dry and sunny days. The 6-day trip costs $2,695 (group of 14-25), based upon double occupancy. Price includes accommodations, all meals on the river, and the fully escorted itinerary. To secure your space, you need to place your reservation and to submit your $500 per person deposit by contacting:
We recommend you arrange your flights to Brazil on TAM Airlines to Palmas, via Miami, in which case you need to depart a day earlier from the U.S. Most of us will return back to Los Angeles on July 17th. Those who would like to add time in Río de Janeiro or in the Amazon may opt to return a few days (or weeks!) later. If you can, join Walker and me on this unique adventure! Richard Bangs P.S.
