Having guided treks in the Himalayas for many years, my encounter last summer with the European Alps proved to be just as exciting and compelling. Mountains the world over evoke the same feelings and emotions. The crystal clear air, the pristine environment, and the ever-changing light take your breath away. Hiking amidst the amazing scenery is an experience not to be missed.

On our very first day's hike we were greeted with a profusion of wildflowers, rock spires shrouded in mist, and views of Mont Blanc and a chorus of other mountains.

We picnicked at the most scenic spots and dined on the most delectable foods. At the end of a hard day's hike it was heavenly to arrive at our cozy inn, have a welcoming hot shower, meet for a glass of good French wine followed by a sumptuous dinner.

Laurent Langoisseur, leader extraordinaire, complemented all this wonderful scenery. He was not only a fountain of knowledge of the flora, fauna, and geology but a comic and overall great human being.

Just when we thought we had overindulged we were briefed on the next day's hike, which usually involved several thousand feet of elevation gain and loss and crossing a pass—all in a day's work! On most days our efforts were rewarded with a visual feast of snowy peaks and icy glaciers interspersed with quaint and charming alpine villages.

No trip is complete without good company and on this trip we had no dearth of friends who shared the same passion for the mountains, a zest for life, and craved a good old-fashioned physical challenge.
