Mountain Travel Sobek has been leading satisfied clients to the ends of the earth for over 35 years and have been exploring Antarctica for almost 25 years. For our Antarctica adventures we work with Peregrine Adventures, an Australia-based adventure travel company that has operated active shipboard expeditions for several years. Our Antarctica departures are therefore are not exclusive Mountain Travel Sobek departures.
Unique Itineraries
We go to great lengths to ensure you get the most out of each day you're in the Antarctic, by keeping the ship's daily itinerary very flexible. That way we can linger longer when the wildlife viewing is superb or quickly move to new areas when spontaneous opportunities arise. Since there's plenty of light during the Austral summer we can make landings from early in the morning to late in the evening. And we try to make as many landings as possible so you can spend as much time as possible on shore to experience the magic of Antarctica hands-on.

The Best Expedition Leaders
The leaders on your Antarctica voyage are extraordinarily experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate about Antarctica. You will learn so much from them during group lectures, slide shows, or exploring the shore on excursions. And with a small passenger group and a high number of leaders and lectures, you will enjoy a high staff-to-passenger ratio. |
Sea Kayaking Option

All excursions are fully supervised by an experienced kayak tour leader. We provide all the gear, including kayaks, paddles, drysuit, and lifejacket. Akademik Ioffe - Comfortable and Convenient
As you travel down into the realm of icebergs and penguins, you’ll be as far from home as you’ll ever get, but you won’t lack for comfort. The Akademik Ioffe was built in Finland in 1989 as a research vessel for the USSR Arctic survey. It measures 385 feet in length, is ice-strengthened, has a stabilizer for a smoother voyage, a 24-hour access to bridge, and large, comfortable, outside view cabins. She has a dining room /lecture hall large enough to accommodate all passengers in one sitting and a bar/lounge on the main deck. There’s also a library/conference room, TV lounge, sauna, polar plunge pool, small gym, elevator, and full-service laundry. The Ioffe uses a highly refined fuel - the cleanest and most environmentally friendly of any used in the high seas. We are also very strict about recycling and limiting our impact on this pristine environment. The ship carries all required communications and navigation facilities and equipment. The dress code is casual and the atmosphere is relaxed.
For guided excursions, you’ll be whisked ashore on one of our fleet of comfortable Zodiac landing craft. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy an average of two landings a day (weather permitting) on days when the ship is not traveling. During landings, you’ll go ashore for a few hours with the expedition staff. And, you'll have total access to the bridge - 24 hours a day.
The Ioffe is of Russian registry and carries an experienced crew of 59 (more than a 2:1 ratio) and a profecient , authoritative captain.
