We have quite a lot of opportunities for cultural interactions on this trip. Here we visit a yak herder family for tea. We were also offered a taste of dried yak cheese. It is chewy and a staple of the yak herders.

The yak herders set up shop at our camp and you can have an opportunity to buy things made of yak wool, like decorations for the yaks, yak bells, and yak wool, textiles such as rugs, jewelry, and who knows what else!

I ended up buying a stone thrower from this man and he demonstrated how to use it. It was entirely handcrafted from yak wool and it was amazing how far he could throw a stone.

Another incredible camp. Notice the yak. Yaks are some of the hardiest, toughest animals in the world and are only found at higher elevations, usually above 10,000'. A male yak stands nearly six feet tall at the shoulder and can weigh over a ton.

The highest pass on our trek was 16,000' and this is how it looked hiking up to the pass. The scenery inspired a haiku:
Himalayan peaks
Jagged, smooth, twinned, all unique.
Like people who trek.

It is always a high point of the trip to reach the pass. In Bhutan, as in Tibet and Nepal, the passes are festooned with prayer flags.

In Thimpu at the end of the trip we got the chance to visit some very interesting places such as the Textile Museum, the Indigenous Tibetan Hospital of Herbal Medicine, and the Arts and Crafts School. My favorite place was the craft school where you could watch, and talk to, the students who were learning 13 of the traditional crafts of Bhutan. The work that they were doing was incredible.

A picture of our incredible staff…CathyAnn, the guide, the local guide, the cooks, animal tenders and all around great staff who loved to sing and dance around the campfire most nights and wanted to share their music with us. They live in my heart now.
