Soon the storm clears enough to get some breathtaking
views of the ruins. THIS is why I'm here, and I start
photographing furiously. But photos can't really
do it justice. To see Machu Picchu in its full setting,
atop a mountain nearly encircled by the river, it
seems there could be no better site for such a place! |

|

The llamas are indifferent to their sublime surroundings,
though. Heck
they've seen it all before, I'm
sure! |

|

But what do llamas know, anyway? Even if the sight
hadn't taken our breath away we'd still be glad of
this inspiring spot to sit and rest after a long
and rewarding hike.

Machu Picchu is perhaps the most impressive man-made
thing I've ever seen. Its scale alone is awesome,
with countless rooms, corridors, and terraces cascading
down the flanks of the mountain. My advice: be prepared
to do a LOT of exploring
it's irresistible.

Our trip ends in Cuzco, where we spend a leisurely
day exploring the streets, plazas and markets of
this former Inca capital. Nothing gave me a feel
for the history of Peru quite like encountering traditionally
dressed Quechua people on streets lined with both
Inca and Spanish colonial architecture! |
