Experience is Key!
We
have operated the finest organized treks and tours to
Peru since 1971 and have personally scouted the best
trails to hike and the best spots to visit. We've worked
with the same people in Peru for more than 25 years,
refining our operation, and perfecting the art of camping
with your comfort in mind. This means you can take off
to Machu Picchu (or any other Mountain Travel Sobek adventure
for that matter!) knowing you're in the best possible
hands.
- "Our man in Peru," Alfredo Ferreyros, has
developed and explored trips with us since the late 1970s.
He was the first to open the route to Choquequirao in
1976 as featured on our Trekking in the Vilcabamba trek.
Early on, Alfredo traveled to Nepal to learn the fine
points of trekking. Without a doubt, he organizes the
best treks in Peru.

Local Guides - the Insider's View
- We work with the best and most experienced guides in
the business who are either natives of the region or
long-standing residents. They are eager to give you a
perspective on the local culture and share their passion
for the country they call home. They are famed for their
incredible attention to detail and for providing the
right mix of fun, learning, and challenge. Here are a
few of them that may accompany you on your Machu Picchu

assistant with Mountain Travel Sobek some 20 years
ago, and is now considered one of the finest, most
experienced trek and tour leaders in Peru. (He
has hiked the Inca Trail more than 100 times!)
His passionate love of his country and its people,
and his encyclopedic knowledge of Peruvian history,
archaeology, and natural history combine to make
him a wonderful trip leader. Manuel graduated with
a degree in agriculture and raises white corn on
a farm in a valley near Cuzco.

Lazo - is one of Peru's most experienced
adventure travel guides, with more than 15 years
of experience leading treks and whitewater rafting
trips. A resident of Cuzco, Manolo is well versed
in the rich history of the Andes as well as the
classic trekking routes that follow the ancient
Inca trade paths. His knowledge of the country,
its people, and traditions add immensely to your
appreciation of the trip. Manolo is fluent in English
as well as Spanish, and conversant in Quechuathe
historic language of the Incas, and he has a gift
for instilling confidence in every trekker.

Active Adventures
The
best way to see the world is by enthusiastically participating
in it! We have the broadest array of trips to Machu Picchu
- including the classic train ride, a one-day hike, and
a four-day trek - each carefully crafted to show you
the best that Machu Picchu and the surrounding area have
to offer and give you a unique perspective on this culture.
- Our Machu Picchu adventures are much more than just
visiting Machu Picchu (though Machu Picchu is pretty
spectacular in itself!) - it's a full-on immersion into
the Inca world. Our adventures include visiting Cuzco
and nearby Inca ruins, hikes to out-of-the-way villages,
and rafting the gentle rapids of the Urubamba river through
the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Plan Nothing - Enjoy Everything
The
best part of a Mountain Travel Sobek trip is that we
do all the work so you can relax and have all the fun
. Many of you don't have the time to do the hours of
research and planning necessary to create a world-class
adventure vacation, but that's what we do every day!
So leave the details to us.
- On treks, a diligent camp staff takes excellent care
of you. Porters or pack animals carry all the gear (you
only carry your daypack), and when you roll into camp,
your tent is already set up and afternoon tea and snacks
are awaiting you.
- Also on trek, a friendly cook crew prepares delicious
and wholesome meals featuring hearty soups, stews, and
fresh fruits and vegetables. You simply won't believe
what they can whip up out there in the middle of nowhere!
Not to mention the added bonus..."bed tea" brought
to your tent each morning! We can't think of a better
way to start the day.
- When not camping, you'll stay in the finest accommodations,
including the elegant five-star Hotel Monasterio in Cuzco,
and dine on sumptuous food.
