Experience Counts

In 1970, only a year after Mountain Travel was established, two of its three founders, Leo Le Bon and Allen Steck, led the company's first climbing trip in the Alps based out of Chamonix, France. At that time, Chamonix was already considered one of the world's noted mountaineering centers, and from here the group made ascents of Mont Blanc and scores of other peaks in the region, including the Matterhorn, Grépon, and Aiguille du Midi. Our founders fell in love with the Alps, and ever since 1970, adventuring there has been a prominent part of our program.

What does that mean for you? It means you can join our Mont Blanc adventure knowing you're in the best possible hands, with a company that has 35 years of experience and know-how to ensure a smoothly operated trip filled with the spirit of adventure.

First Class Local Guides

When joining any of our Mont Blanc adventures, you will travel with a team of English-speaking guides from the prestigious Compagnie des Guides, a professional guide association that dates back to the first climb of Mont Blanc over 200 years ago. They all have their roots in the region – and our experience has taught us that there's no one more qualified to lead your adventure than the locals. Their insights and knowledge of the natural setting as well as their ability to relate their culture is a rare opportunity to learn and benefit from a unique experience. And who else but the locals would know about that very special picnic place, the secret trails, where to find the best views, or the best cappuccino?

Laurent Langoisseur
Laurent arrived in Chamonix more than a dozen years ago after working for the national railroad system. Upon his arrival in the valley, he immediately fell in love with the mountains, and after passing all his qualifying tests to become a mountain guide was awarded the coveted patch of the Compagnie des Guides. An avid sports enthusiast and inexhaustible hiker, Laurent's knowledge of flora, fauna, and geology are a good complement to his guiding skills. During the winter, he's a ski patrol monitor in the mountains above Chamonix.

Jean Marc Vaillant
Jean Marc began guiding for MTS several years ago, and is what the French call polyvalent ("able to do many things"). His talents range from being a licensed pyrotechnic specialist, snowboard manufacturer, journalist, musical group crew, and theater worker. If this weren't enough, in addition to his passion for hiking, he also teaches children the skills of mountain biking, skiing, and snowshoeing.

Mike Cooper
Mike began his professional career in the UK. After spending several days during his vacation in Chamonix, it became clear to him that this is where he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Fourteen years later he's still here. Mike is now married to a French woman, has two children, and considers the Chamonix Valley his home. He is the first-ever Englishman to receive certification as part of the prestigious Compagnie des Guides.

Active, Unique Itineraries

With 35 years of experience, we know how to show you the best of this region. Your guide is familiar with every aspect of the trip and has the logistics down to an art. And if weather becomes a factor they'll always have an alternate route.

To enjoy your Mont Blanc adventure, you need to be an experienced hiker in excellent physical condition. This trip is challenging and you must be prepared (and in shape!) to hike five to eight hours a day on trails with steep ascents and descents averaging 3,000 to 4,000 feet up and 2,000 to 3,000 feet down each day. No technical climbing or other special abilities are required.

You can choose between a nine- or thirteen-day Mont Blanc adventure (on the 9-day adventure there are four fewer days of hiking—perfect for those with limited time!) And with almost 20 departures in the summer months, there's sure to be a date that fits your schedule!

Charming & Comfortable Accommodations
If you're the kind of person who loves spending the whole day playing in the mountains but prefer sleeping in a comfortable bed at night, our Mont Blanc adventure is THE trip for you. Accommodations are a mix of delightful hotels and mountain inns (most with private baths) that are comfortable and reflect the charm of the local culture. There's nothing better than winding up a day of hiking with a hot shower, a glass of fine wine, and a great meal.

Who said adventure travel meant roughing it?

The Most Delicious Cuisine

In addition to great hikes, striking scenery, and great accommodations, you will also enjoy delicious food and fine wines on your Mont Blanc adventure. (After all, you're in France, Italy, and Switzerland - countries famed for their enjoyable cuisine!) Most of our travelers are also adventurous when it comes to sampling local dishes, and this often becomes one of the highlights of the day! And, you will also discover that slowing down, taking your time, and savoring a meal is a custom in the Alps that's very easy to get used to.
