Conservation in Africa
It takes a lot to change the world, but taking it one step at a time, you can actually make a difference. We are extremely proud to work with a group of people in Africa who are involved in exciting and important grassroots conservation programs. Check out some of the things they do to help create a better world for Africa's environment, people, and wildlife.

Conservation in AfricaLion Research in Tsavo

Iain Allan, Mountain Travel Sobek's field director in Kenya, is an honorary warden in Tsavo East National Park, a park famous for its population of maneless lions. Maneless male lions are a rare phenomenon found only in parts of Kenya and in Asia, and renowned in history as "the man-eaters of Tsavo" for killing 130 workers during the building of the Uganda Railroad in 1898.

In June 2001, Iain started his own lion identification research project along the Galana River in Tsavo East National Park. Iain and his team are identifying key pride members and following pride movements, and so far they are extremely excited about their findings. Nobody has ever studied these lions before, and the findings are proving to be of considerable importance in unraveling the mystery of why these lions have such different habits.

The lion identification research project is on-going, and we hope to involve and share these findings with our travelers on our Kenya adventures in the near future.

The Wilderness Trust
Conservation in Africa
Through our partners in Southern Africa we are happy to support a variety of initiatives such as:
  • The Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project
Purpose of the project is to aid re-establishing rhinos in the Okavango Delta.

  • Botswana Wild Dog Research Project
Supporting a long-term study of critically endangered African wild dogs in the Okavango Delta of northern Botswana.

  • Save the Rhino Namibia
Supporting efforts to stop the poaching of the desert adapted black rhinoceros and increase its population.

  • Rural School Initiative
    Financial support of local schools.

  • Children in the Wilderness
The aim of this project is to offer an environmental learning experience to underprivileged children who live in extremely remote villages to get them interested in wildlife and conservation.

So, if you're ever traveling with us in Africa don't miss the chance to ask the guides about their involvement in conservation projects. Their dedication and engagement is an inspiration.
