"At this time, Mountain Travel Sobek is in the vanguard of American tour companies offering guided outdoor trips to the country… Though the country is small — it has about 20,000 square miles, just a bit less than West Virginia — it is home to a thrillingly diverse landscape of alpine peaks, old-growth forests, highland villages, deep canyons, emerald rivers and, to the south, drier, low-altitude Mediterranean terrain."
~ As featured in the New York Times, Sunday April 20, 2008!

It is rare to find a region that offers such diverse beauty and harmony as you’ll find in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an independent country of the former Yugoslavia. Its jagged limestone mountains, lush valleys, centuries-old forests, crystal-clear rivers, and green mountain lakes are of astonishing beauty, and it is from these pristine areas that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s rich cultural heritage evolved.

Our adventure here is an incredible exploration of the cultures and landscapes of this formerly war-torn region, now eager to share their natural and cultural wonders with visitors. You’ll hike rugged trails through pristine conifer forests to the summits of several low-elevation peaks, which once provided protection for the Illyrians from Roman invaders and slowed the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia, creating a rugged self-reliant culture that still dominates present day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Along the way you’ll discover “old world” highland settlements dating back to medieval times, spend a day rafting the Neretva River, prized for its glinting turquoise waters, and make your acquaintance with the towns of Sarajevo, the capital (and location of the 1984 Winter Olympics) and Mostar, the unofficial capital of Herzegovina.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Visit a scenically beautiful and remote destination with few, if any, tourists
  • Hike the majestic limestone peaks of Sutjeska National Park and explore medieval highland villages of old world Europe
  • Raft the Neretva River, known for its beautiful turquoise waters and deep canyon gorges
  • Visit Sarajevo, the crossroads of ancient civilizations and the center of old Ottoman life
