New for 2008!

National Geographic Adventure Magazine's Best Outfitters on Earth issue, November 2007Check out the November, 2007 issue of National Geographic Adventure Magazine where Glacier Hiking the Swiss Alps has been honored as one of the “25 Best New Trips” for 2008!

Many people see the Alps from afar, but few have the chance to strap on crampons and cross the high glaciers for themselves! Join us for this strenuous trek over sparkling ice fields and beneath towering peaks. No previous experience with crampons is required, and you’ll receive thorough training before heading out onto the Aletsch, the largest glacier in the Alps and a newly designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll challenge yourself with eight glacier crossings in all, as well as rugged overland hikes over dizzying mountain passes, past dramatic crystal formations, and with views of famed peaks like the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. If you’re the kind of person who understands that a true alpine immersion requires more than an espresso on the veranda of a ski lodge, then this is the ultimate trip for you!

  • Hike the glaciers of the Swiss Alps—an MTS exclusive itinerary!
  • See the great peaks of the Bernese Oberland: the Mönch, Eiger, and Jungfrau

Map of route taken on Glacier Hiking the Swiss Alps. Itinerary: Glacier Hiking the Swiss Alps

Day 1 - Arrive in Ulrichen, Switzerland, a tiny hamlet accessible by train from Geneva.

Day 2 - From Oberwald (4,552'), take a scenic acclimatization hike to the Hotel Belvedere (7,680’) overlooking the Rhone Glacier—source of the Rhone River!

Day 3 - Traverse both rock and ice today while crossing the Rhone Glacier and hiking on alpine trails to the Grimsel Pass (7,206'), with its bird’s-eye views of the southern range of the Alps.

Day 4 - A challenging uphill glacier climb to the Oberaarjoch Hut (10,842'), which overlooks dramatic granite walls, U-shaped valleys, and the shark-fin shape of the Finsteraarhorn (14,232').

Day 5 - The entire day will be spent in crampons as we cross three different glaciers en route to the Finsteraarhorn mountain hut (10,150').

Day 6 - Rest day at the hut or optional hike to one of the nearby peaks.

Day 7 - Today we’ll descend across the Fiescher Glacier and up to the Grünhornlücke saddle (10,922') to see views of what lies in store for us—the Aletsch Glacier!

Day 8 - Surrounded by an amphitheater of glaciated 13,000-foot peaks, we’ll cross the Aletsch, taking in the fascinating scenery of U-shaped valleys, glacial cirques, horn peaks, and moraines along the way. Once at the moraine, remove crampons and continue hiking along an alpine trail to Fiescheralp. Descend by tram into Fiesch.

Day 9 - Depart Fiesch.
