Deep in the heart of Brazil, in the state of Tocantins, is a desert oasis called the Jalapão, a magical wilderness of translucent jade-green rivers, waterfalls, freshwater springs, golden sand dunes, and 3,000-foot sandstone plateaus. It’s a wonderful setting for adventures of all sorts: on this trip you’ll explore its beautiful environs on a three-day rafting trip down the Río Novo, a clear warm-water river with lively rapids (getting wet is part of the fun!) and comfortable camps on virgin sandy beaches where you’ll enjoy the moon and stars of the tropical night. You’ll also swim in hidden lagoons (so clear you might want to bring your snorkel mask along), play in the many waterfalls, and may see toucans and other birds, including the rare Brazilian merganser. You’ll end the adventure in Río de Janeiro, an utterly captivating city that will charm you with its natural wonders, spectacular scenery, amazing beaches, friendly “Cariocas,” and lively nightlife (tune up your samba skills!).

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

Map of route taken on Rafting the Jalapão adventure in Brazil. Itinerary: Jalapão & Río Adventure

Day 1- Meet in São Paulo, Brazil.

Day 2 - Fly to Palmas, the capital of the state of Tocantins. Transfer to Novo Acordo.

Day 3 - Drive to a campsite near São Felix. This is a long day of off-road travel by four-wheel-drive truck, but we’ll stop along the way for a swim in the Sono River and to relax at a turquoise-hued waterfall.

Day 4 - Visit a spring with such forceful pressure that it’s impossible to sink, and the Mumbucas community, where handicrafts are made using capim dourado, an endemic grass. Continue to the Jalapão dunes and camp beside the Río Novo.

Day 5 - Board rafts for an easy float down the Río Novo. Along the way we’ll stop at a beautiful beach for lunch and go for a swim in a nearby lagoon.

Day 6 - The rapids increase in size (Class II/III) and are interspersed by calm stretches where we can swim and enjoy the beauty of the river. Opportunity to hop out of the boat and float down the river.

Day 7 - The last day of rafting ends with a bang as we negotiate some Class III/IV rapids. After a picnic at the Velha Waterfall, drive to Taquarçú, a village with more than 70 waterfalls!

Day 8 - Morning hike to a nearby waterfall. Transfer to Palmas and fly to Río de Janeiro.

Day 9 - Hike to the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain (not taking the cable car as most people do) for wonderful views of Guanabara Bay, then lunch at a churrascaria (barbecue house), a staple of Brazilian culture. Time to relax at the beach before evening samba dancing!

Day 10 - Hike in the Tijuca National Forest, a lush sanctuary in the heart of the city, then visit Corcovado Mountain, with its famous statue of Christ the Redeemer. Depart Río in the late afternoon.
