New for 2009!
A 40th Anniversary Follow the Leader Trip with Don Johnston

Combine a Class IV whitewater trip with an exploration of some of Nepal’s most sacred Hindu and Buddhist sites and you get the kind of trip that MTS does best—remote, challenging and exquisitely beautiful. Flowing down from Tibet’s holy Mt. Kailas, the Karnali offers powerful high-volume rapids with names like “First Blood” and “Flip and Strip.” Our guide is Renaissance man Don Johnston, legendary boatman, novelist, literature professor, and war-zone coordinator for Doctors Without Borders. And there’s as much to do off the river as on—we’ll trek around the hilltop paradise of Nagarkot, ride elephants through Bardia National Park, and after a week of crashing whitewater, the time we spend exploring the shrines and temples of the Kathmandu Valley will be a welcome opportunity for contemplation and relaxation.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Challenging whitewater rafting in the most remote, least-visited region of Nepal on the beautiful Karnali River
  • Ride elephants in Bardia National Park—with the opportunity to see Bengal tigers and rhinos
  • Trek in the hilltop resort of Nagarkot, with beautiful views of the Himalaya, including Mount Everest, and panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley
  • Explore important Hindu and Buddhist temples in Kathmandu Valley
