New for 2008!

If you want an African expedition that is anything but ordinary, then your destination can only be Mozambique. Devastated by civil war in the 1980s, the country has been at peace for a decade now, and tourism is only beginning to resurface. This trip is challenging but extremely rewarding, for as you tour the breathtaking natural scenery, you will also be witnessing the rebirth of a nation. You’ll journey to Limpopo, a Transfrontier park that encompasses portions of three countries and has become a model for how ecosystem health can transcend political boundaries. You’ll also visit the Bazaruto Archipelago, where low-impact eco-lodges overlook azure seas that are ideal for snorkeling and whale watching. Mozambique is still raw and largely untouristed; our journey is rewarding but not for the faint of heart, as it showcases both the natural richness and the extraordinary challenges facing Africa today.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Visit an undiscovered ecotourism destination in its infancy
  • Explore remote, sprawling Limpopo National Park and the Maputo Elephant Reserve
  • Relax on pristine beaches and swim in the Indian Ocean—keep your eyes open for the giant, harmless whale sharks!

Map of route taken on our Adventures in Mozambique trip. Itinerary: Adventures in Mozambique

Day 1 - Arrive in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

Day 2 - Tour Massingir Dam, a massive irrigation project that is being reclaimed as a portion of the Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

Days 3-4 - Explore the clear waters and white sand dunes of the sprawling Uembje Lagoon near the town of Bilene.

Days 5-6 - Enjoy the long and beautiful beaches of the Indian Ocean along the Inhambane coastline.

Days 7-8 - Camp on the remote, pristine Pomene Peninsula, where flocks of flamingoes compete for your attention with perfect sunsets over the ocean. The Pomene estuary also offers a sheltered haven for swimming.

Days 9-11 - A flight drops us off on Bazaruto, largest of four islands in the protected Bazaruto Archipelago. Traditional fishing villages dot the islands, and dolphins, turtles, and dugong populate the seas.

Days 12-13 - At the Maputo Elephant Reserve, you’ll look for elephants, hippos, and crocodiles in this unique park where green hills roll seamlessly into the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. The area is currently being restored and there are plans to introduce more animals into the reserve.

Day 14 Return to Maputo and fly home.
