Alaska Canoeing & Hiking: Western Arctic Wildlife and Waterways with Audubon Alaska
New for 2009!
A Special 40th Anniversary Trip!
Alaska is a wildlife-lover’s paradise, and this trip to a remote Northern corner of the Last Frontier offers the best of the best. The journey is a celebration of Mountain Travel Sobek’s 40-year commitment to working with conservationists, and for this special trip we will be joined by wildlife experts from Audubon Alaska. Co-led by an Alaska Discovery guide and an Audubon naturalist, you’ll explore the wetlands around Teshekpuk Lake, which have some of the highest concentrations of nesting birds in the Arctic, as well as wolves, moose, grizzlies, and a caribou herd that is 45,000 strong. Animal-lovers, bird watchers, and paddlers alike will revel in this wide-open Alaskan wilderness as we paddle down the Colville River, carving its way through cliffs and rolling tundra hills before emptying into the Arctic Ocean. Never has this landscape been more vibrant—or more at risk. The threat of destructive oil drilling looms large; come explore this still-pristine wonderland in the company of the people who have dedicated their lives to protecting it in perpetuity.

Itinerary: ALASKA ~ Western Arctic Wildlife and Waterways
Day 1 - Arrival in Fairbanks.
Day 2 - Travel northwards for a spectacular bush plane flight over the Brooks Range to the old exploration camp of Umiat, then continue on to our Colville River put-in.
Days 3-7 - Canoe along the Colville River, one of the northernmost big rivers in the US. Along the way there will be time for side-hikes and birding—with a plethora of “nesting raptors” including Artic Peregrines, Gyrfalcons, Golden Eagles and rough-legged hawks—and, of course, basking in the beauty of the Arctic wilderness.
Day 8 - We’ll get back in the bush planes for the hop to Teshekpuk Lake, a 22 mile long lake in the western Arctic, where 90,000 geese congregate each summer, and up to 46,000 caribou—one of the largest herds in North America—migrate to calve.
Days 9-10 - Spend two days exploring Teshekpuk Lake, with lots of hiking and birding.
Day 11 - After a morning hike we’ll make our way by plane back to Fairbanks.
Day 12 - Depart from Fairbanks, or join our extension to Denali National Park.
