The great plains of the legendary Serengeti…animals as far as the eye can see…an ancient land where mankind was born. This is the vision of Africa we all hold in our hearts. You’ll explore Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife paradises: the Serengeti, Africa’s premier haven for wildlife (it doesn’t get much better than this); Tarangire, graced by the unique beauty of its baobab woodlands and the fantastic concentrations of game; Ngorongoro Crater, one of the world’s most beautiful natural wonders; and the Crater Highlands, where you’ll have fantastic opportunities for genuine cultural interactions with the Maasai. And that’s just for starters. A three-day walking safari in the Serengeti gives you a chance to experience the real Africa, to revel in the smaller sights, smells, and feelings that are missed from a vehicle. You may find a lion’s paw print in the damp ground, watch a dung beetle laboriously rolling a ball of dung uphill, or smell a herd of elephants before you spot them in the valley below. Seasonal and mobile camps harken back to the era of Hemingway. On this classic safari, you’ll live the Africa dreams are made of!

  • See all the major wildlife on a first-class safari in Tanzania’s celebrated parks—Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and the legendary Serengeti

Map of route taken on Mountain Travel Sobek's East African safari, Ultimate Tanzania Safari: The Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater. Itinerary: Tanzania Safari - Explorer's Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater

Day 1 - Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania.

Days 2-3 - Explore little-visited Tarangire National Park, whose small permanent river attracts a multitude of thirsty animals all day long. Here you’ll ease into the rhythm of the bush: you’ll wake early to the chorus of the birds, spend the day exploring and observing wildlife, and thrill to the roars of lions in the night.

Day 4 - Drive to Lake Manyara National Park, situated at the foot of a spectacular escarpment in the Rift Valley. The lakeshore teems with colorful water birds of every variety, and here you’ll find one of the most fantastic hippo pools in Africa as well as the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. Continue to Gibb’s Farm, a delightful oasis in the midst of the African wilds.

Day 5 - Drive to the highlands above Ngorongoro Crater, where in addition to enjoying fantastic views, we’ll meet the Maasai, and be welcomed into their boma (homestead).

Day 6 - Fabulous game viewing on the floor of Ngorongoro Crater, a veritable “Garden of Eden.” If you had only one day in your life to see African wildlife, Ngorongoro would be “the place.” Enjoy an Ol Pul (meat eating) festival with our new Maasai friends!

Day 7 - Descend from the Ngorongoro highlands onto the vast plains of the Serengeti, game viewing along the way. Once at camp, you’ll go for a short orientation walk to learn about walking in the bush.

Days 8-10 - Walking safari through the Serengeti, moving slowly with the guide who interprets what you see and hear and stopping for lunch under a shady tree or cool overhang. Many of the places we hike have not been visited by man for more than half a century! On Day 10, meet vehicles and drive to a seasonal tented camp.

Day 11 - A day of traditional game viewing by vehicle, to round out your adventure in the Serengeti.

Day 12 - Drive to Arusha and depart, or join one of our East African extensions.
