It's Back!

This summer will be your last chance to run the Çoruh River in its entirety! Sadly, a huge dam is being built on this amazing river that has given us so much pleasure over the years. A whitewater challenge without equal, the Çoruh has been many a river veteran’s favorite adventure (we always considered it a hidden gem—one of the best of all our river trips). It has everything you could ask for on a rafting trip: scenic surprises, cultural richness, photographic opportunities, and many exhilarating Class IV/V rapids that make river running the thrill-sport it is. You’ll float beneath incredible thousand-year-old castles, spend a day with the rug-weavers of Yusufeli, take a two-day hike into the spring meadows and glacial origins of the Kaçkar Mountains (with scenery reminiscent of the Swiss Alps), and challenge the awesome rapids while in the hands of our capable, renowned boatmen—the best in the world! Join us now before it’s too late!

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Last chance to run one of our river classics in its entirety!
  • Enjoy enriching encounters in hidden villages—a cultural leap back in time
  • Camp beneath ancient castles, hike into the Kaçkar Mountains, encounter challenging rapids!

Day 1 - Meet in Istanbul, Turkey, and fly to Erzurum. Afternoon visit to Seljuk monuments.

Day 2 - Drive to the put-in near the town of Maden. After a sumptuous lunch and safety orientation we’ll put in on the river for a short run through some fun Class III/IV rapids to Ispir.

Days 3-9 - The rapids begin gently, gradually increasing in size and number to swell and boil in a rapid-fire display. Besides exhilarating whitewater, you’ll enjoy beautiful scenery: the walls of the Çoruh gorge rise a near-vertical 5,000 feet to a backdrop of snowcapped peaks; Seljuk and Byzantine castles perch on rock ramparts high above the river. On a two-day layover you’ll head into the Kaçkar Mountains, where you’ll visit local farmers, have tea with their families, and hike below snow-covered peaks reminiscent of the Swiss Alps.

Days 10 - End the river trip at Artvin, just a few kilometers from the present-day Georgian border. Drive back to Erzurum over the peaks and valleys of the Allahuekbar Mountains.

Day 11 - Morning tour of the mountain town of Erzurum. Fly to Istanbul.

Day 12 - Depart Istanbul. (Or if you have the time, continue on with us to enjoy a 3-day extension in Cappadocia.)
