This superb adventure in the Czech Republic’s southern lands of Moravia and Bohemia offers a rare opportunity to explore a remarkable historical legacy of Baroque and Rococo castles, ancient but well preserved medieval towns, and centuries-old chateaus with impressive wine cellars. (This region is noted for its vineyards and you’ll have ample opportunities to taste its fine wines!) Complementing your cultural discoveries are walks in the limestone Pálava Hills, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Sumava National Park, with its untouched wildlife. Itinerary: CZECH REPUBLIC - Vienna to Prague
Day 1 - Arrive in Breclav, Austria, and transfer to the medieval town of Mikulov in southern Moravia, in the heart of the wine district. Afternoon hike to Lednice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an elaborate Gothic Revival chateau, one of the most ornate examples of this historical architectural style.
Day 2 - Visit Dolni Vestonice, where archaeological digs have unearthed a 29,000-year-old hunting settlement with fragments of the oldest pottery in the world, then hike over the Pálava Hills, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with unique flora and fauna along the Czech-Austrian Border. Later, you’ll travel to Petrov and visit ancient wine cellars where you may taste local wines. Continue to Uherske Hradiste..
Day 3 - Walk through beech forests to 13th-century Buchlov Castle, set on a hilltop and one of the oldest in Moravia. Continue to Buchlovice, visiting 18th-century Buchlovice Chateau, where you’ll sample wines from its wine cellar. You’ll also visit Velehrad with its beautiful 9th-century cathedral.
Day 4 - Explore the medieval town of Telc, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, then visit the handsome Renaissance town of Slavonice. You’ll end the day in Jindrichuv Hradec, an old royal town with the third biggest chateau complex in the Czech Republic.
Day 5 - Explore the medieval town of Trebon, whose surrounding countryside is a conservation area, then hike to the ancient village of Kojakovice. Later, transfer to the exquisite medieval jewel of Cesky Krumlov (yet another World Heritage Site!).
Day 6 - Sightseeing tour of the town, including a tour of the Krumlov Chateau. In the afternoon, you’ll walk to Zlatá Koruna, home to a Cistercian monastery, and hike over Klet Hill, the highest peak of the Blanský Forest, back to Cesky Krumlov.
Day 7 - Hike in Sumava National Park, a former military zone closed to the public for 40 years, which now has almost untouched wildlife.
Day 8 - Drive to Prague, with a stop at the village of Holasovice, a wonderful example of a traditional central European village. Depart Prague. (Afternoon sightseeing in Prague can be arranged.)
