You’d be hard-pressed to find desert hiking destinations more beautiful than Grand Canyon National Park and the nearby red rock formations of Sedona. You'll explore the most iconic sites of the Southwest along with some lesser-known jewels on this seven-day, family-friendly adventure.

The trip starts with a hike to the top of 7,326-foot Red Butte, an ancient volcano and sacred peak to the Havasupai Indian Nation. Then we’ll head to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park to hike the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails, two of the most classic routes in this million-acre World Heritage Site. After we get our fill of the great Canyon and its 40 million years of geologic history, we’ll head south to Sedona, an historic Old West farming community for more hiking or sightseeing or shopping. No matter how you spend your time here, you’re sure to feel the peace emanating from the otherworldly ocher, amber, and red rock formations surrounding you.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hike the classic trails of the Grand Canyon—Bright Angel, South Kaibab, and the Rim Trail
  • Explore Sedona’s Oak Creek Canyon and experience the incredible colors of this magical southwest landscape
  • Discover Wupatki Ruins and Sunset Crater National Monuments, in the heart of the Navajo Nation

Itinerary: Classic Hikes of Grand Canyon & Sedona

Day 1 - Arrive in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Day 2 - Drive north through the Sonoran Desert, onto the high plateaus and red canyons of central Arizona, and on to Grand Canyon National Park. En route we’ll hike Red Butte, with fabulous 360-degree views including the San Francisco Peaks. Afternoon hike of the scenic Rim Trail, a wonderful introduction to the canyon.

Day 3 - We’ll set off early morning for the Bright Angel Trail, the longest hike of our trip, offering wonderful views all along its path. Seasoned hikers will want to continue to Plateau Point, which offers breathtaking views of the Colorado River 1,300 feet below.

Day 4 - Today we hike the South Kaibab Trail! Following a series of switchbacks, the trail opens onto a dramatic panorama at Ooh Aah Point, with breathtaking 360-degree views of the canyon. This scenic trail is unique in the Grand Canyon — it traverses along a ridgeline, instead of descending a side canyon, allowing for unobstructed views and excellent photography.

Day 5 - Morning hike to behold the magic of sunrise in the Canyon. Afternoon exploration two of the crown jewels of America’s National Monuments: Wupatki Ruins, an 800 year old pueblo, and Sunset Crater, where the Bonito Lava Flow still seems to move. Late afternoon drive through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona, one of the most scenic drives in the United States.

Day 6 - Enjoy a morning hike to the Eagle’s Nest overlooking Oak Creek. And, for the afternoon, choose your own adventure! Swim at Slide Rock State Park, hike the Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte loop, join a local Pink Jeep Tour or helicopter tour (additional cost), or go shopping in Tlaquepaque — Sedona's Arts & Crafts Village.

Day 7 - Morning hike to Red Rock Crossing, one of the most defining symbols of the American West, featured in more than 60 classic Hollywood films! Next to Cathedral Rock, with a breathtaking panorama of Sedona and the Red Rock Country. Return to Scottsdale and depart.
