It's Back!

Few mountain ranges of the world are as steeped in history and legend as the Caucasus. Join us and discover a seldom explored corner of Europe, sometimes referred to as “The Alps of the East.” From the bustling cosmopolitan Georgian capital of Tbilisi—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—you’ll head to Tusheto Province where you’ll begin your eight-day trek among the Caucasus’s highest peaks, including Mount Kazbek, the spectacular mountain on which Prometheus met his fate. Along the way you’ll discover Georgia’s rich Eastern Orthodox culture, sample unforgettable wines, and take occasional meals with families, all of which is certain to make you enamored of Georgia’s people and culture. Leading this special expedition is Rob Smurr, who has led many of our past treks in this part of the world with great acclaim. We can’t think of anyone better qualified to head up this expedition!

Map of the route we take on our Trekking in the Georgian Caucasus adventure tour. Itinerary: Trekking the Georgian Caucasus

Day 1 - Meet in Tbilisi, Georgia. Walking excursion in the historic old town.

Day 2 - Day trip to David Gareji Monasteries, one of Georgia’s ancient and unique architectural monuments, for a walk among the monasteries, which contain noted cave-cells and painted frescos.

Day 3 - Drive over the main Caucasian ridge at Abano Pass (9,610') and descend to mountainous Tusheti province and the village of Omalo (6,560'). Here you’ll visit the ancient Kesalo fortress, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries.

Days 4-11 - Trek through luxuriant river valleys and dramatic granite gorges, enjoying panoramic views of the glaciated Caucasus Mountains, visiting legendary lakes, stopping at remote medieval villages with ancient citadels that defended the northern border of Georgia for hundreds of years, and visiting with the friendly local people, who welcome us into their homes. You’ll cross several passes (the highest is 11,830').

Day 12 - Meet with the vehicles and return to Tbilisi, crossing Datvis Jvari Pass (8,780') on the way. Before arriving in Tbilisi, you’ll stop to visit Mtskheta, the ancient capital of the Georgian kingdom of Iberia from 500 B.B.-A.D. 500, and explore 6th-century Jvari Monastery and 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
