MTS Himalayan guide Cathy Ann Taylor scouted this Bhutan trek for us in the spring of 2004, and intriguingly described it as "Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World meets James Hilton's Lost Horizon." At 24,741 feet, the ice-draped Gangkhar Puensuum is the highest unclimbed peak in the world, and will remain so, since the Bhutanese banned mountaineering in 1993.

Our journey features a trek to the foot of the mountain, following the indelible footprints of ancient yak caravans through a verdant botanical greenhouse emerging into alpine meadows with the sentinels of the Eastern Himalaya ever present. En route, you'll witness the best of Bhutan's Himalayan grandeur, meet the farmers and yak-herding families of the highlands, and admire the way this tiny independent nation has so successfully preserved its environment and its thriving Buddhist culture.

Check out our Himalaya Feature. Slideshows, stories, facts, and more.
