Greenland is one of the world's most intensely beautiful Arctic landscapes—and a great place for sea kayaking adventures! With experienced international kayak guide David Nitsch, you'll explore the breathtaking inner fjord systems neighboring Kulusuk Island as you paddle past towering mountains rising straight up from the sea, skirt icebergs four stories high, and enjoy the surprisingly sunny weather of East Greenland.

This weeklong journey allows you to intimately experience Greenland without committing to a long and arduous expedition. Nevertheless, it is best suited for those with previous sea kayaking experience, an expeditionary spirit, and a flexible attitude.

David has been leading kayak expeditions in Alaska and the South Pacific for 15 years, and enjoys a good challenge. Of all the kayaking destinations throughout the world he has most wanted to have a go at, East Greenland tops the list. Two weeks in 2001 and another two in 2005 simply wasn't enough! As a South Pacific connoisseur and expert, David led eight kayaking trips for MTS to Papua New Guinea; the raw beauty of the land and his friendship with local people kept drawing him back, but the logistical and cultural challenges were getting to be too easy. Looking for something new and different, he's redesigned our long and demanding Greenland Kayaking Expedition from years past into a shorter, more comfortable trip, hoping to share the amazing Arctic beauty with a new audience.

Itinerary: Kayaking Greenland

Day 1 ~ Arrive in Reykjavík, Iceland, and connect with flight to Kulusuk, Greenland, an isolated village on a small rocky island situated between high mountains and fjords filled with fantastic icebergs.

Days 2-3 ~ With loaded kayaks we depart, doglegging up Tuno passage and into the Ammassalik Fjord in the direction of the small community of Kungmiut, passing numerous small islands en route. Along the way we’ll explore our surroundings by kayak and on foot.

Days 4-5 ~ We circumnavigate one of several neighboring islands before returning toward the back side of Apusiak Island, perhaps down Niaiqkap Passage. We may traverse the middle of Apusaik Island by paddling through several tidal lagoons, and camping one night on a large lake bisecting the island.

Day 6 ~ We paddle to Apusiak Glacier, a huge tidewater glacier just a few miles from town, and make camp on a rocky island center stage, right in front of the ice face.

Day 7 ~ Complete our paddle trip back at the village of Kulusuk and head for the airport. Fly back to Reykjavík in the early afternoon.

Day 8 ~ Depart Reykjavík.
