Discover a natural wonderland of massive icebergs, calving glaciers, and more light and sun than you could ever imagine! North of the Arctic Circle is Greenland’s Disko Bay, where seals and whales thrive in impossibly blue waters and the never-ending views are simply astounding. You’ll start with an exploration of the famous Kangai Icefjord, a long, deep, and narrow ice-choked fjord carved by glaciers of millennia past. It’s so thick with colossal “castles” of ice that you can barely see any water in it—a natural phenomenon that’s one of the most amazing sights in Greenland (and probably the world!). You’ll also cruise north to the remote wilderness surrounding Ice Camp Eqi, situated right in front of the Eqi Sermia Glacier. From here you’ll hike to the glacier moraine for excellent views of the glacier from above and onto the Arctic Ice Cap, the second largest ice sheet in the world! Your adventure ends with a visit to the historic settlement of Ilimanaq and a cruise past the nearly five-mile-wide mouth of the Icefjord itself, a humbling experience as you pass icebergs towering hundreds of feet above you!

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Explore the nearly 35-mile-long Kangai Icefjord, packed with huge icebergs (some the size of football stadiums!)
  • Go back 4,500 years in time and visit the archaeological site of Sermermiut, one of the most important settlements in Greenland’s history
  • Hike on the Arctic Ice Cap (the second-largest ice sheet in the world)
  • Spend two nights at Ice Camp Eqi, with its unobstructed views of the Eqi Glacier

Map of the route followed on Mountain Travel Sobek's hiking and sea kayaking adventure tour in Greenland, Greenland’s Disko Bay Explorer. Greenland’s Disko Bay Explorer

Day 1 - Arrive in Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), Greenland.

Day 2 - Explore Ilulissat, Greenland’s third largest town, then hike toward the stunning Kangai Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Along the way you’ll pass some old Inuit graves, the famed gorge known as Kællingekløften (Suicide Gorge), and see the ruins of Sermermiut, an important archaeological site going back nearly 4,500 years.

Day 3 - Board a small passenger ship for a cruise to Ice Camp Eqi, about 35 miles north of Ilulissat. Good chance to spot whales along the way! Once at the Ice Camp, you’ll hike to the moraines of the Eqi glacier for a breathtaking view of the glacier from above.

Day 4 - Follow in the footsteps of the famed French polar scientist Paul-Emile Victor for a hike along a historic trail to the Arctic Ice Cap, the second largest ice sheet in the world!

Day 5 - After a morning hike, board the ship back to Ilulissat.

Day 6 - Board a small charter vessel for a trip to the rarely visited village of Ilimanaq (Claushavn), passing the five-mile-wide face of the Kangai Icefjord and numerous giant icebergs en route. In Ilimanaq you’ll stroll past colorful houses, visit the church, the cemetery, and the community house, and just drink in the atmosphere of this idyllic place. Return cruise to Ilulissat.

Day 7 - Free day to shop, visit the museums, go back for another view of the unforgettable Kangai Icefjord, or other optional activities.

Day 8 - Depart Ilulissat.
