Itinerary: Adventures in Guatemala

Day 1 - Meet in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Transfer to Antigua, the peaceful old colonial capital.

Day 2 - Drive to the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán, encircled by three major volcanoes. Take a boat tour on the lake, ending at Panajachel .

Day 3 - Explore Chichicastenango, the most amazing marketplace in Guatemala, then fly (or drive) to Coban, where you’ll visit an orchid farm and Mayan museum.

Day 4 - Drive to Semuc Champey, the headwaters of the Río Cahabon, and explore its magical travertine pools. Overnight in Lanquin, where you can visit a nearby cave and watch some 20,000 bats surface at dusk!

Day 5 - Put in on the Río Lanquin and push off in paddle rafts or oar boats (your choice) into the lively rapids, which become larger as we meet the confluence of the Río Cahabon (two Class IV rapids test our newly acquired paddling skills!).

Days 6-7 - Encounter continuous Class III rapids as we continue downstream past several waterfalls. Along the way we try to spot various birds (oropéndolas, green parrots, kingfishers, and night hawks) and stop at a Quiche community to provide school supplies. After a great hike to a waterfall and swimming hole, continue down the river, surging through the Class IV “Corkscrew,” exploring a large cave that we swim into, and relaxing at some hot springs overlooking the river. Take out and drive to Río Dulce.

Day 8 - Search for wildlife and the elusive manatee on an early morning boat cruise. Drive to Tikal and visit the ruins; watch the sunset from the Pyramid!

Day 9 - Hike to Temple IV for a beautiful sunrise and to listen to howler monkeys make their morning wake-up calls! Afternoon flight from Flores to Guatemala City, then transfer to Antigua.

Day 10 - Transfer to Guatemala City and depart.
