Tiny Honduras is an incredible feast of biodiversity—from mountainous tracts of pristine cloud forests to coastal lowlands, mangrove-lined lagoons, and the sparkling offshore reefs of the Caribbean. This multi-faceted adventure—a must for those with a genuine interest in the natural world—features hiking in Pico Bonito National Park, Honduras’s most unexplored national park; boat excursions in the largest manatee reserve in Central America; snorkeling some of the best reef systems in the world (where whale sharks are occasionally seen!); and exploring ancient Maya ruins at Copán, renowned for its fine stonework and inscribed hieroglyphics. Along the way you’ll enjoy special private tours with local conservation organizations, which no other company offers. Accommodations are in lovely lodges of style and comfort, boasting an airy ambiance, lush gardens, and indispensable hammocks—the perfect spot to unwind after an active day of exploring.

Map of the route taken on Mountain Travel Sobek's cultural, hiking, snorkeling and sea kayaking adventure tour, Honduras Tropical Explorer. Itinerary: Honduras Tropical Explorer

Day 1 - Arrive in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Transfer to a four-star luxury eco-lodge nestled in the rainforest foothills of the Sierra Pico Bonito.

Day 2 - Hike a scenic ridge trail in Pico Bonito National Park, which follows two cascading rivers, and observe the fauna and incredible birdlife of the rainforest (there are some 275 resident species!).

Day 3 - Travel by boat into the 100,000+ acre wetland reserve of Cuero y Salado, home to crocodiles, manatees, and hundreds of bird species. We’ll explore the estuary maze of mangrove wetlands and the heart of this reserve with a representative from FUCSA, a local conservation organization.

Day 4 - A day of world-class snorkeling at Cayos Cochinos, a small group of beautiful islands and coral cays in a marine protected area about 11 miles off shore. We’ll enjoy a traditional seafood lunch in a native Garifuna village.

Days 5-6 - Transfer to Copán, considered the most artistically advanced Maya city. Tour the ruins, explore the bird-rich highland ecosystems, and visit a butterfly farm.

Day 7 Return to San Pedro Sula and depart.

Our groups hike to the 200-foot Zacate waterfall in Pico Bonito National Park in Honduras. Detailed Itinerary - Honduras Tropical Explorer: Reef, Rainforest, & Mayan Ruins
