Tinted in weathered shades of rose, yellow, and gray, the splintered spires and dramatic rock walls of the Dolomites rise in elegantly chiseled shapes of fantastic form, looking every inch like a landscape devised by the gods. And if this isn't exactly heaven, well, it's about as close as you can get.

Our exhilarating adventure showcases the best of this stunning mountain Valhalla. Each day you'll hike up to ridges and passes for spellbinding views of huge peaks and pinnacles, then descend to lush green valleys where wildflowers bloom in pastoral meadows and storybook villages hug the valley floor.

At day's end you'll relax at hotels that are deluxe oases of comfort, where you'll absorb the region's fascinating culture and cuisine - a unique blend of Italy and the South Tyrol. Count on mind-boggling scenery throughout, including the striking, often-photographed pillars of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, arguably the best known landmark in the Dolomites.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hike amid a glorious landscape of pillars, pinnacles, and colossal rock walls
  • Varied, moderate hikes with challenging options
  • Enjoy the spa amenities of the Hotel Posta Zirm in Corvara
  • Discover delectable Austro-Italian regional cuisine

Itinerary: Hiking in the Dolomites

Day 1 - Meet in Venice, Italy, and drive to the famous alpine village of Cortina d'Ampezzo, your base for the next three nights.

Day 2 - Circumnavigate the stunning pillars of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Monte Paterno, one of the most scenic mountain landscapes in the Dolomites.

Day 3 - Hike under the rock walls of the Tofana di Rozes, one of the most important fronts during World War I.

Day 4 - Hike into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park, a stronghold of the Ladin language. Overnight at a mountain inn. (You'll need to carry your overnight belongings this day.)

Day 5 - Hike through the Altiplano di Fanes, with its panorama of the Western Dolomites, to the Val Badia in the South Tyrol. Overnight at a deluxe hotel in Corvara for the next four nights.

Day 6 - Hike along the south face of the incredible Sella massif. Views include Marmolada (11,024'), the highest peak in the Dolomites, and the world-famous rock wall of the Civetta.

Day 7 - Hike a pilgrimage trail past hamlets, open meadows, and pine forests to the Santa Croce Sanctuary, site of a church built in 1484.

Day 8 - Hike beneath the towering pinnacles of Pizzes da Cir and on to the Forcella di Ciampai Pass (8,280'). Optional climb of Sas Ciampac (8,775') for views of the Eastern Dolomites.

Day 9 - Return to Venice and depart (or extend your stay in this remarkable city!).
