Alex Fiksman, lead guide for our Kilimanjaro & Beyond trips, has designed this trek on his favorite mountain, Mount Kenya (17,058'), which has more wildlife (imagine elephants at 12,000 feet!), glaciers, lakes, and gorges than Kilimanjaro - and fewer people! Our six-day traverse of the mountain, which straddles the equator but is permanently glaciated, takes us on untrodden trails through the lower equatorial rainforest and over gently rising moorlands to a world of high tarns and glaciers. The views from Point Lenana (16,355')—the highest point accessible by hikers—are as breathtaking as any from the highest point of the mountain, with astounding views of Mount Kenya’s two jagged summits, Batian and Nelion, surrounded by lesser needles and eleven glaciers. (You will not tackle the actual summit, as this would require considerable technical moutaineering skills.) This one-of-a-kind itinerary includes excellent game-viewing in Shaba National Reserve, home to rare desert species and one of the most beautiful and remote parks in Kenya, and the Masai Mara, Africa’s premier game country, where, on summer trips, you’ll have a chance to witness the annual Great Migration!

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Six-day traverse of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak (and considered the most beautiful!)
  • Hike on untrodden trails to Point Lenana, highest spot accessible by hikers
  • Explore the hidden gem of Shaba National Reserve and the consummate Masai Mara, one of the finest game parks in all Africa

Map outlining the route of the MTS trip in Kenya: Wilds of Mt Kenya. Itinerary: Trekking the Wilds of Mount Kenya

Day 1 - Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to the Karen Blixen Cottages, located in Karen, a peaceful suburb about 20 minutes from downtown Nairobi.

Day 2 - Depart Nairobi and travel north to the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, traveling through some spectacular country as we contour around the valleys of the mountain. Camp at the edge of Mount Kenya’s rainforest at an elevation of 6,000 feet.

Days 3-4 - Meet with our porters and begin hiking through the equatorial rainforest, the home of elephant, Cape buffalo, and leopard. Continue up through bamboo forest and glades of montane forest to our private camp on the shore of Lake Ellis (11,800').

Day 5 - Traverse the eastern moorlands of Mount Kenya along the edge of the spectacular Nithi Gorge to our private camp at Hall Tarns at 14,500 feet, perched near the edge of the chasm.

Day 6 - Enter an alpine world of rock, ice, and beautiful mountain lakes as we hike to Point Lenana (16,355'), the third highest peak on the mountain. Descend to Lake Michaelson (13,500'), one of the most beautiful lakes in East Africa.

Day 7 - Hike down the Gorges Valley, skirting the base of the Nithi Gorge, and arrive at our camp in the late afternoon, where a festive dinner awaits!

Days 8-10 - Drive to the Northern Frontier District and Shaba National Reserve, a great place for undisturbed wildlife viewing in a true wilderness setting. Here we’ll enjoy morning and evening game drives, and can walk along the Uaso Nyiro, checking the tracks of animals large and small.

Days 11-13 - Fly to the Masai Mara, Kenya’s game country at its best. Our aim is to observe the abundant wildlife in this spectacular region of the Serengeti plains, with game drives in the mornings and late afternoons. The variety of animals in the Mara is extraordinary and we are sure to find all the classic African species, including the surprisingly graceful elephants and aristocratic giraffes. While in the Mara we’ll also have a chance to do some walking outside of the reserve accompanied by Masai warriors as guards.

Day 14 - Final game drive before flying to Nairobi for departure on homeward-bound flights.
