North of the Arctic Circle, well off the beaten track and virtually untouched by the hand of man, lie Norway's most pristine wilderness areas. Though spectacular in nature, they have not yet been discovered by the crowds, and our new adventure explores the best of this wildland frontier.

Go hiking and canoeing in Øvre Dividal National Park, a glacially-carved, lake-studded wilderness abounding in wildlife and rich mountain flora. And on Senja Island, Norway's second largest, you'll explore traditional fishing villages and hike to viewpoints for incredible panoramic vistas of the vast Norwegian Sea (next land to the west is Greenland!).

All along the way you'll learn about Norway's history and about the indigenous Saami culture - the country's largest ethnic minority - from knowledgeable guides who love sharing their perspectives on their native land.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Venture north of the Arctic Circle for hikes in the land of the midnight sun!
  • Hike and canoe in Øvre Dividal National Park, home to reindeer, brown bears, Arctic fox, lynx, and wolves
  • Explore the fjords and mountains of Senja Island, not yet discovered by the crowds

Itinerary: Hiking North of the Arctic Circle

Day 1 - Meet in Oslo, Norway, home to many fine art, folk, and historical museums.

Day 2 - Fly above the Arctic Circle (66š 33’ N) to Bardufoss. Transfer to a cozy inn on the Målselv River for dinner and a concert of traditional music.

Days 3-4 - Hiking in Øvre Dividal National Park, a beautiful landscape of gentle valleys dotted with the remains of Saami cultural sites. While here we'll board canoes for a paddle on the Divielva and Målselv Rivers.

Day 5 - More hiking in Øvre Dividal National Park, then transfer to Senja Island, with its steep mountain ridges and indented fjords.

Days 6-7 - Hike in the sheltered inland valleys and high mountains of Ånderdalen National Park and enjoy expansive views of Norway's breathtaking fjord system. Overnights in a small town on the northwestern shores of the island.

Day 8 - After a morning hike, transfer to Tromsø, starting point for many an Arctic expedition. Enjoy a farewell dinner with the guide and group.

Day 9 - You'll have a chance to explore this picturesque town before traveling to Oslo.

Day 10 - Depart Oslo. We recommend you extend your stay for additional sightseeing in Oslo, including the Viking Ship Museum with its displays of ancient Viking ships, and, nearby, the polar ship Fram, used by polar explorers Nansen and Amundsen on their respective expeditions to the North and South Poles.

Hiker enjoying the views on the trails of Norway.
