A 40th Anniversary Follow the Leader Trip with John Yost

Outrageous. Audacious. Unprecedented. Ridiculous…We could fill the entire catalog with superlatives describing this trip, but it’s probably best to let the details speak for themselves: Nine rivers, six continents, 25 days, and visionary boatman John Yost to tie it all together. You’ll barely have time to dry your hair in India before you’re helicoptering to your put-in in Australia. We’ll take advantage of overnight flights to spend 16 days paddling Class IV water, and occasionally taking in a bit of the countryside as we churn ever onwards. It’s a little bit insane, sure, but John Yost wanted to do something epic to put his unique stamp on MTS’s 40th anniversary. We’d call this the trip of a lifetime but we’re afraid that might be an understatement. There’s just one thing we’re wondering: Any chance we could add in Antarctica too, John?

Day 1 - Arrival in Fresno, California.

Day 2 - Paddle the wave trains of the Kings River.

Day 3 - Raft the Class IV Kaweah through Sequoia Park.

Day 4 - Run Class III-IV sections of the Upper Kern.

Day 5 - Fly to Quito, Ecuador.

Day 6 - The Toachi River flows through virgin cloud forests and steep walled canyons—plenty of Class III-IV water too!

Day 7 - Challenge the thunderous hydraulics at the confluence of the Toachi and the Rió Blanco. Night flight to Madrid.

Day 8 - Madrid to Barcelona to the Pyrenees.

Day 9 - Rafting on the Noguera Pallaresa.

Day 10 - More on the Noguera.

Day 11 - Free time in Barcelona; night flight to Nairobi.

Day 12 - Culture shock anyone? Today we run the Athi River through Tsavo National Park.

Day 13 - Big water and big game on the Athi.

Day 14 - More on the Athi; drive to Nairobi.

Day 15 - Exploring in Nairobi; night flight to Mumbai.

Day 16 - Flight to Himalayan city of Dehra Dun. Camp on the banks of the Tons River.

Day 17 - Technical Class III-IV water on the Tons, with lots of steep granite gorges.

Day 18 - More boating on the Tons, then overnight train to Delhi.

Day 19 - Overnight flight to Cairns, Australia.

Day 20 - Arrive in Cairns.

Day 21 - A helicopter ride over Mungalli Falls brings us to our put-in on the North Johnstone River.

Days 22-23 - Gigantic Class V water, immense waterfalls and utterly remote boating on the North Johnstone.

Day 24 - One last day of big water; return to Cairns.

Day 25 - Free morning in Cairns. Shower, sleep, exhale. Board flight to LAX.
