Itinerary: Rio Tambopata

Day 1 ~ Meet in Lima, Peru.

Day 2 ~ Fly to Juliaca and transfer to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca, visiting the pre-Inca ruins of Sillustani along the way.

Day 3 ~ Sea kayak on Lake Titicaca to the famous floating reed islands of the Uros, who still live on floating mats of dried totora (a reed-like papyrus that grows in the lake’s marshy shallows).

Days 4-5 ~ Scenic drive through the Andean altiplano and across the Cordillera Carabaya. Cross a 15,000-foot pass and descend into the cloud forest to the headwaters of the Tambopata River.

Days 6-11 ~ Our rapid descent of the steep canyons and riotous rainforest begins, a week of action and adventure replete with wildlife. The whitewater is challenging and exciting (Class III-IV rapids), and off-river activities provide daily highlights. The river flows into the heart of the Baguaja Sonene National Park, home to jaguars, tapirs, giant otters, and capybaras as well as over 800 species of birds and 1,200 different species of butterflies.

Day 12 ~ We exchange rafts for motorized outboard canoes, and motor to the famous Tambopata Research Center, headquarters for in-depth explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife. We enjoy biologist-guided tours of the jungle, with an option to kayak on the river as well.

Day 13 ~ Dawn excursion by canoe to Tambopata’s clay lick, the world’s largest, where a rowdy crowd of brilliantly colored parrots, macaws, and parakeets converge in a delightful fusion of noise and bright colors to eat the clay in the cliffs, an essential part of their diet. Continue by boat to a jungle lodge near Puerto Maldonado.

Days 14-15 ~ Fly to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incas. Afternoon free to explore on your own. Depart Cuzco on Day 15. We highly recommend you stay a few extra days to visit the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu.
