Kenya Safari: The Great Walk of Africa
Leave the 21st century behind and revisit the Africa of the explorers! Join legendary safari guru
Iain Allan, our right-hand man in Kenya, on an 11-day, 110-mile game tracking walk across the
wilderness landscapes of Tsavo, Africa's largest national park. On this epic journey, you'll retrace
the path of one of Iain's greatest adventures, undertaken in 1997: a "Summit to Sea" trek from
the summit of Kilimanjaro to the beaches of the Indian Ocean (the expedition was later recounted
in the book The Shadow of Kilimanjaro, written by Rick Ridgeway, a member of that
original expedition).
Moving camp every day, you'll hike game trails along the Tsavo River past
occasional World War I forts to the place where the infamous "Man-eaters of Tsavo" halted the
British Empire in 1895, then hike the entire length of the palm-fringed Galana River, home to
large elephant populations and the unique maneless male lions - an MTS exclusive! A short stay
at the Indian Ocean coast - to swim, snorkel, and relax under the tropical sun - gently eases you
back (regretfully) into civilization.

Brief Itinerary: The Great Walk of Africa
Day 1 - Meet in Nairobi, Kenya, and transfer to the Karen Blixen Cottages, located on the site of her old coffee plantation (of Out of Africa fame).
Day 2 - Fly to Tsavo West National Park. Afternoon game drive to our camp below Mzima Springs.
Day 3 - Begin walking across the vast 8,300-square-mile Tsavo wilderness, following game trails along the Tsavo River. Many hippo sightings are possible, as well as plains game such as lesser kudu, gerenuk, and giraffe. Late afternoon game drive.
Days 4-6 - Continue our foot safari along the Tsavo River. Tsavo is the largest elephant ecosystem in the world, and the Tsavo River is a vital destination for them. This was also once the location of intense fighting during World War I and many old fortifications still exist.
Days 7-12 - Enter the semi-desert country of Tsavo East National Park. Here you'll walk along the wide sandy beaches and palm trees of the Galana River, which sports one of the largest lion populations in East Africa, as well as big herds of zebra, hartebeest, impala, and fringe-eared oryx. We inevitably come across the infamous Tsavo maneless lions during the safari.
Day 13 - The day's walk ends with a drive to a deluxe hotel in Malindi on the Indian Ocean coast.
Day 14 - Optional excursion to the Gedi ruins, an old Swahili town that was destroyed by the Zimba cannibals in the 15th century - or just relax on the beach! Late afternoon flight to Nairobi for departure home, or join us on one of our extensions in East Africa.
