Everest trekking—adventure near the top of the world
Very few have stood on Everest’s daunting summit. It is a place rich in tales of glory, and in tragedy. At an elevation of 29,029 feet, summiteers stand eye to eye with cruising airliners in a frigid world with but a third of the atmospheric pressure found at sea level. Ever since Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay's legendary first summit in 1953, intrepid adventurers have flocked to Nepal's Khumbu in search of mountaineering's "holy grail."
Though we leave the summit to others, trekking to Everest Base Camp is still an adventure of the highest sort and just enough of an introduction to the rarefied atmosphere of the high Himalaya for most of us (max. elevation 18,192 feet). En route you'll trek through lively Sherpa villages, and take an optional hike to the 18,000-foot summit of Kala Patar for superlative views of the surrounding Himalayan giants, including Sagarmatha--"Mother Goddess of the Snows". And if you prefer your oxygen on the thicker side, our classic first-timer's trek—"Everest Lodge-to-Lodge"—combines challenging hiking at somewhat lower altitude (max. elevation 13,000 feet) with all the comforts of home, trading mountain tents for stays in the area's finest lodges.
Hiking Everest with MTS
No place is more strongly associated with MTS than Nepal, since it is here that we laid the cornerstone of our passion for adventure in the late 1960s by organizing the first commercial treks in the country. And regardless of which Everest adventure you choose, you'll get the same exceptional guides and support staff that seasoned travelers have come to expect from a Mountain Travel Sobek journey. We engage seasoned trip leaders who know the Khumbu inside out, and whose extensive knowledge and enthusiasm will make your Everest experience come alive. And a top notch support staff will take care of all the details, from setting up your tent each day to preparing excellent meals including hot meals on the trail and "bed tea" brought to your tent each morning. (We can't think of a better way to start the day.)
