Easy trekking in the heart of the serene Annapurna Range and wildlife viewing at Chitwan National Park

Get up close to the Annapurna Range’s sacred peaks and intimate trails without giving up a good night’s sleep. Our lodge-to-lodge trek starts each day from the area’s most comfortable accommodations and takes us to some of the best vistas in the entire region—elevated encounters with the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain, sweeping views of the entire Annapurna Range. Hike beside terraced hillsides, through subtropical forests covered with tree orchids, rhododendrons, and magnolias, visit small mountain hamlets, and sleep in lodge rooms that look out on the mountains.

Top your trek off with an exciting visit to Chitwan National Park, Nepal's crown jewel of national parks.  Here, among the flat jungles of the terai lowlands, we take nature walks, ride elephants, and board dugout canoes in search of rhino, sloth bear, colorful birdlife, and-—the star of the show—the always-elusive and endangered Bengal tiger. Returning to Kathmandu, we have time for some last minute shopping, before heading home with a rush of lasting memories.

    Day 1 : Arrive in Kathmandu (4,500')

Arrive in Kathmandu by 2:00 pm. A Mountain Travel Sobek representative will meet you outside customs and immigration at the airport, where he or she will answer questions, brief you on immediate arrangements, and escort you to your hotel. The trip leader will hold a short briefing at your hotel around 4:00 pm, regarding trek arrangements and general orientation to Kathmandu. Most flights from the U.S. require three days of travel and overnight en route (you arrive in Kathmandu on the third day). More specific details will be sent to you with your pre-trip information. Dinner this evening will be on your own.

Day 2 : Pokhara (2,800') to Modi River Valley (3,470')

After breakfast, we transfer by road to our trek starting point (approximately 1 hour). Our walk will follow a ridgeline in the lower foothills of the Annapurnas with surrounding views of the Pokhara Valley. This route then drops to the Modi River Valley, where Sanctuary Lodge is located at 3470'. The lodge has magnificent views of the sacred and unclimbed Fishtail Mountain, or Machhapuchhre, as it is locally known. Lunch is at the lodge followed by an optional walk to the nearby village of Birethanti. Or you may choose to spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding river valley (Hiking time 3-4 hours)

  • Anl_2012itinday3
    Day 3 : Majgaun (4,620')

Following a leisurely breakfast, we leave Sanctuary Lodge and trek to Gurung Lodge at 1450 meters. We cross a bridge near the lodge and start trekking heading up the Modi River. This is a little used trail that starts off rocky and then meanders though a forested area. We then reach a long, winding stone staircase which we start to trek up. We reach the level ground at a small farming hamlet. We then trek along this ridge to the village of Waday. From Waday there are far reaching views of the whole valley. Our trek then descends for a while to another bridge. After crossing this bridge, we have another uphill push, passing though the small villages of Patlekhet and Majgaun before arriving at Gurung Lodge.  (Hiking time 3-4 hours).

After lunch, you may chose to do a hike up to the nearby village of Tanchok, where there is a traditional house now made into a museum. The contents of the house illustrate how the local people live, together with the tools and implements of day to day traditional village life. You also have the option to visit a local school. (Hiking time 1-2 hours).

    Day 4 : Majgaun to Dhampus (5,000')

This morning we start out trekking through the unspoiled village of Patlekhet. Our walk then takes us through sub-tropical forests that include tree orchids, rhododendrons and magnolias. Along the way, we will stop at the village of Pothana where many Tibetan traders live and sell their souvenirs. After about 3 ½ hours, we arrive at Basanta Lodge. After lunch at the lodge there will be an optional walk through the old village of Dhampus. From the lodge, there are sweeping views of the entire Annapurna Range.

  • Day 5 : Pokhara (2,800')

After breakfast, we depart along the ridge and descend through the wooded hillside and terraced farmland to the valley floor at 3300'. (Hiking time 1 ½ hours). We then transfer by vehicle to Pokhara (approximately 30 minutes).  En route, we can visit a Tibetan Refugee camp, on request.

    Days 6 - 7 : Chitwan National Park

Drive 5 hours to Chitwan National Park, the jewel of Nepal's wildlife parks since its inception in 1973. The main highlights of our wildlife activities are elephant rides to see the rare one-horned rhino, sloth bear, four species of deer, a dazzling array of tropical birds, and perhaps a leopard or tiger. Rhinos and deer are frequently sighted, but the chances of seeing a leopard or tiger are remote. The birdlife is fantastic-some 530 species have been sighted within the park. We'll seek out the fauna via elephant back and on foot, and also take wooden boat rides into the watery realm of the threatened gharial crocodile, mugger crocodile, and numerous waterfowl.

Your accommodation is at Tharu Safari Lodge.

  • Anl_2012itinday8alt2
    Day 8 : Kathmandu

After breakfast, we'll drive to Bharatpur for a short 25-minute flight back to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel, the spend the afternoon resting or exploring the city on your own. (1 hour driving)

  • Anl_2012itinday9
    Day 9 : Kathmandu

Kathmandu is one of three former medieval city-states in the valley, along with Bhaktapur and Patan. We'll take a morning tour of Bhaktapur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a wonderfully preserved example of medieval Nepalese town life. One highlight is Durbar Square with its many temples, the remains of an ancient palace, and the intricate Sun Dhoka (“Golden Gate”), a gilded copper gate crafted in 1753. The afternoon is free for relaxing, last minute shopping, or sightseeing on your own. Cap off your adventure with a farewell dinner with your group at a local restaurant.

  • Day 10 : Depart Kathmandu

Transfer to Kathmandu airport and depart on homeward-bound flights. Or, if you'd like to extend your adventure in Asia, join us for one of our extension trips to Nepal, India, Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia!

Easy

Many activities are optional and involve fairly easy travel. Trips may include short hikes of two to three hours or optional walks at low elevations. Includes less demanding sea kayaking and river rafting trips with Class I-II rapids.

Moderate

More active trips involving hiking over moderate terrain, usually - but not always - with vehicle support and at elevations less than 10,000 feet, or trips with long hiking days, multiple sea kayaking days, wilderness camping, or other invigorating activity. On many trips, you can elect to skip a day's activity, depending on logistics. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips and river rafting trips with Class III rapids.

Strenuous

Hiking and trekking over steeper or more rugged terrain or where elevations may exceed 10,000 feet - often several days in a row. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips (4-5 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.

Ultimate Challenge!

Our most demanding trips: trekking over steep, rugged terrain at high elevations (no vehicle support) or with substantial altitude gains and losses; trips to remote, extreme wilderness; mountaineering trips. Includes our most demanding sea kayaking (5-7 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.
