Day 1 : Arrive Maun & Fly to Kalahari Desert

Welcome to Botswana! Upon arrival at the airport in Maun you will be met by your Mountain Travel Sobek trip leader and escorted to your awaiting flight aircraft transfer to the Kalahari Desert. Upon arrival you will be transferred to Camp.

Deception Valley Trails Camp is set in Deception Valley, a prehistoric riverbed flanked by petrified dune lands. The area is very appealing after brief rains, when it is covered with nutritious grasses that attract vast herds from all over the enormous reserve. These large congregations of desert wildlife with their young are followed by opportunistic predators.  Allowing for a sublime ‘back to nature’ desert experience, accommodation is in 3 metre x 3 metre (9.84 feet x 9.84 feet) dome tents, complete with mini-verandas. Pure cotton linen (with duvets) on GI stretchers, bedside table with silver lantern and mini luggage benches finish the interior. The bathrooms are en-suite, canvas-wraparound and open-air, with the entrance via a zip door at the rear of tent. In addition to the short-drop toilet, your bathroom sports an old-style tin bucket shower – with hot water available whenever you should require it. There is a separate toilet near the main area available for use during the day. In the main area, evening campfires are the norm, while hurricane lanterns add to the atmosphere.

Your activities here will focus on day and night game drives as well as pristine nature walks. Permanent waters dotted with palm-filled hardwood riverine forests, a multitude of clear water channels, and expansive floodplains make up the Xigera Concession. Your activities at Xigera Camp typically include mokoro and motorboat outings. Game drives are always dependent on the water levels on that particular day. Mammal sightings include water-loving red lechwe, spotted-necked otter, elephant and tsessebe along with the elusive sitatunga. Predators include leopard and spotted hyena. Xigera is a delight for bird watchers; expect to see Pel's fishing owl, African skimmer, greater swamp warbler, and wattled crane. • Gomoti Tented Camp
    Santawani Concession

Gomoti Tented Camp lies in the centre of the private 6 000-hectare Santawani Concession, in the south-east corner of the Okavango. The camp is nestled under large Acacia trees in a diverse game rich area. Most of the concession area is covered by a mixed woodland habitat that gives way to open grasslands that can transform into floodplains in years of plentiful water.

Accommodation is in five 5.1 x 3 metre Savannah canvas tents, which are spacious and comfortable, designed to recreate the style of the early explorers, with richly-coloured teak director chairs and comfortable interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, wooden-framed wardrobes, comfortable twin beds and mirrors are provided. A private, en-suite toilet and shower forms part of the structure. Enjoy the view from your director chairs, under the shade of your veranda area during the mid-day.  Paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambience in the evening, while fresh, sumptuous meals are prepared by your warm Explorations staff and served at a long table in the thatched dining area. An after-dinner digestif may be enjoyed around the fire or taken in the cosy lounge adjacent to the dining room.

  • Linyanti Discoverer Camp
    Linyanti Concession

Set in the 125 000-hectare Linyanti Concession bordering Chobe National Park, Linyanti Discoverer Camp is your base from which to explore this enormous wildlife-rich area. Unrivalled in its remoteness and space, the concession is bisected by an ancient watercourse – the now-flowing Savute Channel. Your innovative accommodation is in 6.3 metre x 3.5 metre (20.67 feet x 11.48 feet) walk-in wooden framed canvas sided tents. The tents are airy and designed to recreate the accommodation style of the early explorers, with richly coloured teak director chairs and minimalist interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, canvas and wood wardrobes, bathrobes, comfortable beds and mirrors are provided. Private, en-suite separate toilet and showers form part of the structure. Paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambience in the evening, while fresh, sumptuous meals are usually prepared around a fire by warm and friendly camp staff.

  • Xigera Camp
    Okavango Delta, Botswana

Xigera Camp (pronounced Keejera) lies on the aptly named Paradise Island, surrounded by deep channels and lush vegetation. There are ten raised luxury tents with en-suite facilities, an outdoor shower – and superb views of the classic Okavango Delta floodplains that surround the camp. Meals and evening drinks are enjoyed in the lounge, bar and dining area overlooking a permanently flowing channel or under the stars in a traditional African boma. For those hot days there is a small plunge pool in which to cool off.

  • Anderson Sekgwa

Andy was born at a remote cattle post in Botswana called Shrobe, some 20 miles from Maun. As a young boy, Andy would go out into the bush with his grandfather, who would teach him about the native flora and fauna as well as aspects of local history. Andy began guiding for us in 1987. As a safari guide he was involved in every aspect of running a mobile expedition, including setting up camp, cooking, collecting water and wood, guarding camp and vehicle repairs. Armed with years of practical experience, Andy qualified as a professional guide in 1996 and has been guiding expeditions between Victoria Falls and Maun ever since.

  • Victor Horatius

Victor was born and raised in Maun, Botswana. He spent his weekends and school holidays helping out on a farm in the Kalahari, the beauty of which fascinated him. As a child, he always enjoyed watching the smaller creatures, like bull frogs fighting with each other after the summer rains. These nature experiences sparked his passion and he began searching for a career in the beautiful Botswana wilderness. Victor studied International Business Communication at college and then worked his way up to managing safari camps in the Delta. After a few years of this he began focusing on guiding, and spent five years guiding at Jao Camp, where he progressed to becoming Guide Coordinator. He now holds guiding and walking certifications. Victor is a contributing member of the Botswana Birdlife Association, to whom he reports sightings of rare and threatened species. Tracking, botany and photography are his passions. He has had photos of unbelievable sightings published in Africa Geographic, Africa Birds and Birding and Singapore’s Taste magazine. He has been involved with Children in the Wilderness since 2002, and has traveled to the USA and through most southern African countries.
