Activity Ratings

Easy

Many activities are optional and involve fairly easy travel. Trips may include short hikes of two to three hours or optional walks at low elevations. Includes less demanding sea kayaking and river rafting trips with Class I-II rapids.

Moderate

More active trips involving hiking over moderate terrain, usually - but not always - with vehicle support and at elevations less than 10,000 feet, or trips with long hiking days, multiple sea kayaking days, wilderness camping, or other invigorating activity. On many trips, you can elect to skip a day's activity, depending on logistics. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips and river rafting trips with Class III rapids.

Strenuous

Hiking and trekking over steeper or more rugged terrain or where elevations may exceed 10,000 feet - often several days in a row. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips (4-5 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.

Ultimate Challenge!

Our most demanding trips: trekking over steep, rugged terrain at high elevations (no vehicle support) or with substantial altitude gains and losses; trips to remote, extreme wilderness; mountaineering trips. Includes our most demanding sea kayaking (5-7 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.

Paddling (and other!) pleasures in Baja California

Sun, sand, sea, stars-what more you could possibly ask for to jump-start your life? Baja California, a wilderness of ochre desert lapped by aquamarine seas, is one of the best getaway destinations we know of. On this fun, active (yet entirely relaxing) vacation, you'll learn to paddle a sea kayak in the protected waters around Isla Espiritu Santo in the Sea of Cortez. Expert guides teach you the easy-to-master kayak skills, and soon you'll be paddling the clear-as-crystal waters, feeling your cares trickle away like water drops off your paddle blade. Besides kayaking, you'll swim and snorkel with friendly sea lions and tropical fish, hike in the island's arid canyons, and happily become a prisoner of the island's magic. While relaxing in style at our island camp, you'll dine on tasty Mexican food (yummy fish tacos!), quench your thirst with plenty of frosty drinks (margaritas on the beach give a whole new meaning to the term "happy hour"), and enjoy a paradise of glorious sunny days capped by fiery gold-and-crimson sunsets and a luminous sky full of stars.

Activities

5 days of easy sea kayaking (no previous experience required); Optional day hikes, swimming, snorkeling

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

  • Learn to sea kayak with expert guides in a remote, undeveloped island conservation area
  • Snorkel with playful sea lions and colorful tropical fish
  • Camp on an uninhabited island facing the spectacular Baja sunset - true paradise! (We're the only company to offer a base camp trip-perfect for families and beginners!)
