Activity Ratings

Easy

Many activities are optional and involve fairly easy travel. Trips may include short hikes of two to three hours or optional walks at low elevations. Includes less demanding sea kayaking and river rafting trips with Class I-II rapids.

Moderate

More active trips involving hiking over moderate terrain, usually - but not always - with vehicle support and at elevations less than 10,000 feet, or trips with long hiking days, multiple sea kayaking days, wilderness camping, or other invigorating activity. On many trips, you can elect to skip a day's activity, depending on logistics. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips and river rafting trips with Class III rapids.

Strenuous

Hiking and trekking over steeper or more rugged terrain or where elevations may exceed 10,000 feet - often several days in a row. Includes more demanding sea kayaking trips (4-5 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.

Ultimate Challenge!

Our most demanding trips: trekking over steep, rugged terrain at high elevations (no vehicle support) or with substantial altitude gains and losses; trips to remote, extreme wilderness; mountaineering trips. Includes our most demanding sea kayaking (5-7 hours paddling a day) and river rafting trips with Class IV-V rapids.

Historic, Scenic Jewel of South Africa

A visit to Southern Africa would not be complete without a visit to Cape Town, the historic and scenic jewel of African cities. You can easily spend a few days absorbing its sophisticated atmosphere, with art galleries, the up-and-coming wine country, and the Cape of Good Hope within easy access.

Guided excursions may include a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, a hike at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, viewing the African penguin colony at Simonstown, and a leisurely walk through Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, a stunning showcase of the indigenous flora of Southern Africa.

We have two five-day programs-one with more active options and the other with a cultural focus-also include a visit to the world-renowned Winelands region, famous for its fine wines and Cape Dutch architecture. Choose from the classy Cape Grace Hotel, located on the waterfront and consistently ranked by Condé Nast Traveler as among the top 15 hotels in Africa, or the laid-back Four Rosmead Boutique Guest House, situated on the slopes of Table Mountain in the select residential suburb of Oranjezicht. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill, Lions Head, and the city of Cape Town.

Itinerary
  • Day 1 : Cape Town

    Arrive in Cape Town.

  • Day 2 : Hiking the Silvermine Area of Table Mountain

Drive to the Silvermine Nature Reserve near Constantia (part of Table Mountain National Park) for a moderate to strenuous hike of 5-6 hours on the southern flank of Table Mountain. A lunch stop on Constantiaberg affords ample time to absorb the vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, and the penisula south of the city, before continuing the walk down to Elephant’s Eye Cave.

  • Day 3 : Sea Kayaking to the Penguins or Baboon Walk at Cape of Good Hope National Park

You’ll have two options for your activities:

Option 1: Enjoy a few hours’ easy paddling in twin kayaks along the False Bay Coast (these are safe, comfortable “sit on top” kayaks and require almost no balance or skill). You’ll paddle to the Boulders Beach’s colony of African penguins and view them from the ocean as they swim around this quaint cove.

Option 2: Enjoy a guided encounter with a troop of Chacma baboons in their natural mountain environment and then visit the historic naval village of Simonstown, stopping at famous Boulders Beach for another “creature close-up” with a colony of African penguins.

  • Day 4 : Winelands Mountain Bike Trail

Explore South Africa's wine region as you bike the  Winelands Mountain Bike Trail,  visiting up to four wine farms in the area. The area is justly famous for quality dry white and red wines from noble grape varieties. Our tour visits an interesting mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries.

  • Day 5 : Depart

Depart Depending on your ongoing flights, this morning is at leisure. In the afternoon we transfer you to the airport for your next flight. Breakfast... 5-Day Cape Town "Cultural Touring" Option
