Classic Botswana Safari

From $6,195

  • See the absolute best of Botswana, including a visit to a just-opened private concession, in a way that only MTS’ 35 years of pioneering experience can show you
  • Enjoy phenomenal wildlife viewing by way of rare walking safaris, classic game drives, and traditional mokoro rides
  • The perfect Botswana alternative for those who want an authentic permanent tented safari experience

Wildlife viewing in Botswana is always exceptional, but it’s at its peak during the dry season, when flood levels drop and animals gather around the remaining waterways. Our hand-tailored itinerary lets you take full advantage of the season’s abundance. You’ll stay at carefully selected camps in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve and the Okavango Delta, offering a vast diversity of bird and animal life (including a number of rare species). Since no Botswana safari is complete without water activities, we’ve included camps that are surrounded by water, so you can get up close to elephants and crocodiles on serene mokoro rides through the channels. With MTS, you’ll experience Botswana at its most enchanting.

Day 1: Arrive Maun & Fly to Linyanti Wildlife Reserve

Welcome to Botswana! Please plan to arrive in Maun by 1:30 PM. You will be met by your Mountain Travel Sobek trip leader and escorted to your awaiting light aircraft transfer to the private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your camp and settle in before beginning your first afternoon safari activity.

Set in the 125 000-hectare Linyanti Concession bordering Chobe National Park, Linyanti Discoverer Camp is your base from which to explore this enormous wildlife-rich area. Unrivalled in its remoteness and space, the concession is bisected by an ancient watercourse – the now-flowing Savute Channel. Your innovative accommodation is in 6.3 metre x 3.5 metre (20.67 feet x 11.48 feet) walk-in wooden framed canvas sided tents. The tents are airy and designed to recreate the accommodation style of the early explorers, with richly coloured teak director chairs and minimalist interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, canvas and wood wardrobes, bathrobes, comfortable beds and mirrors are provided. Private, en-suite separate toilet and showers form part of the structure. Paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambience in the evening, while fresh, sumptuous meals are usually prepared around a fire by warm and friendly camp staff.

Days 2-3: Linyanti Wildlife Reserve

These days you have game drives & safari activities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. During the wet and the dry season, wildlife varies. Invariably you will come across a vast array of plains game followed by their predators – lion, leopard, cheetah and brown hyaena. Game drives and guided walks (on request) will unlock the wildlife treasures found here, while San (bushman) experiences provide insight into the unique culture of the local people. The private concession in the Reserve is characterized by open grassy plains, seasonal pans, wooded acacia islands, scrub-covered dunes and fossil riverbeds. Some 220 bird species have been recorded in the area. We have also actively engaged the local Basarwa (Bushman) people, integrating them into the potentially mutually beneficial ecotourism industry. The camp is 100% solar powered.

Days 4-6: Santawani Concession

Board your light charter to the Santawani Concession in the southeast Okavango Delta. Upon arrival you will be transferred overland to your safari accommodaitons where you will call home for the next three days.

Your activities here will focus on day and night game drives as well as pristine nature walks. The alluvial sands in these areas are very fertile, resulting in good grass growth, which attracts a multitude of grazing animal species. Wildlife is plentiful and includes leopard, lion, wild dog, cheetah, giraffe, elephant, and masses of general game.

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accomodation:Gomoti Tented Camp

Days 7-8: Jao Concession

Fly to the Jao Concession where you will enjoy two days of water based safari activities. Pelo Camp is a tented, mobile camp in the heart of the Jao Concession in the Okavango Delta. Given its situation on a small island surrounded by permanent water, the area is perfect for mokoro activities in the open, shallow floodplains. The main area comprises a tented dining area and lounge situated under impressive wild date palms, jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees. Five spacious guest tents have en-suite bathrooms and a covered front veranda. A zipper door separates the sleeping area from the bathroom which has a flush toilet and bucket shower, as well as running water in the basin.

Pelo means ‘heart’ – a fitting name indeed, given the island’s heart shape and location deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta. While poling quietly around the channels, guests have the chance to see elephant, hippo, crocodile and lechwe, as well as the exciting and rare sitatunga. Birding is outstanding, with specials like lesser jacana, slaty egret and wattled crane readily spotted.

Gomoti Tented Camp — Santawani Concession

Gomoti Tented Camp lies in the centre of the private 6 000-hectare Santawani Concession, in the south-east corner of the Okavango. The camp is nestled under large Acacia trees in a diverse game rich area. Most of the concession area is covered by a mixed woodland habitat that gives way to open grasslands that can transform into floodplains in years of plentiful water.

Accommodation is in five 5.1 x 3 metre Savannah canvas tents, which are spacious and comfortable, designed to recreate the style of the early explorers, with richly-coloured teak director chairs and comfortable interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, wooden-framed wardrobes, comfortable twin beds and mirrors are provided. A private, en-suite toilet and shower forms part of the structure. Enjoy the view from your director chairs, under the shade of your veranda area during the mid-day.  Paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambience in the evening, while fresh, sumptuous meals are prepared by your warm Explorations staff and served at a long table in the thatched dining area. An after-dinner digestif may be enjoyed around the fire or taken in the cosy lounge adjacent to the dining room.
