Seeing mountain gorillas in the wild is one of life's most profound experiences, their touching humanity a powerful thing to witness at close range. On this trip to Uganda, a country described by Winston Churchill as “the Pearl of Africa,” you'll track and observe the great apes in the dazzling Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This ancient habitat of steep, jungle-coated mountains shelters exceptional biodiversity, including nearly half of the world’s population of highly endangered mountain gorillas. In addition to the thrill of the world’s most exciting wildlife encounter, you’ll get an incomparable opportunity to roam these old-growth forests with the indigenous Batwa people, who will teach you their customs and traditions as you look at these virgin woods through their eyes.

Day 2: Discover Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

This morning, a MTS representative will pick you up at the Protea Hotel and take you to the airport where you check in and board the one-hour flight to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You will fly into Kihihi, located in the northern section of the park. Upon arrival, you will be transferred by vehicle to the Gorilla Forest Camp, a unique hideaway that serves as your base for the next three nights.

One of Africa’s most ancient habitats, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest comprises steep, jungle-coated mountains known for their exceptional biodiversity. Protected as a national park, these magnificent landscapes are home to more than 160 species of trees, over 100 kinds of ferns and almost half of the world’s population of critically endangered mountain gorillas.

The old-growth forests around the park are also home to the Batwa people, often known as “pygmies.” Today you’ll get a unique opportunity to meet the area’s indigenous tribe, who will lead you through their beloved home and teach you their traditions, from how to use a bow and arrow, hunt small animals with traps and nets and gather honey, to which plants, berries, roots and bark to pick for medicinal purposes. As you hike through virgin nature, see the forest through the eyes of its original keepers, learning how the Batwa people used to live—in caves, treehouses and huts made of grass—and what their community once worshipped, and how they live today.

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodation:Gorilla Forest Camp

Days 3-4: Gorilla Forest Treks

Today we'll take a short drive to the park headquarters to meet with excellent local guides for a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. Next we'll hike into the forest where the gorillas were seen the night before, and track through misty rainforest for our first adrenaline-filled encounter with these wild creatures. The trekking can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. Although the terrain is rough and at times muddy, and the hike physically demanding, the beauty of the forest makes the hard work worthwhile. You’ll definitely forget the fatigue once you lay your eyes on your first gorilla—the experience of seeing these creatures at close range and in the wild is among the most extraordinary nature can provide.

We’ll also devote the next day as well to gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, discovering the rich flora and fauna of this spectacular wilderness, spotting its other primates, mammals, birds, and butterflies.
