Days 9-10: Wildlife Wonders in Hwange

Over the next two days you will enjoy game drives and safari activities at Somalisa Camp in the Hwange National Park. Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and passionate guides who will share their knowledge and love of the bush with you, game drives and night drives. Wildlife sightings include elephant, kudu, sable antelope, zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, the rare and endangered roan antelope, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, and many other wildlife species.

August is peak dry season and great for game viewing. The elephant herds continue to grow in size at the waterholes in front of camp, making for some spectacular elephant interaction. As the surface water in the bush dries up more animals frequent the waterhole: Zebra, impala, kudu, buffalo and sometimes lion, leopard and wild dog can all be seen drinking from in front of the camp. The bush is really thinning out now making it easier to spot the animals and also making August one of the best months for a walking safari. The wild dogs traditionally start to leave the den site and move greater distances in search of prey, which can make sightings less frequent, unless they remain on the concession. Lion remain the most commonly seen predator. Leopard and cheetah are seen occasionally, but are shyer than lions, so tend to hide away.

Daytime temperatures are generally warm, especially towards the end of the month, but night and morning temperatures can be very cold and so please be prepared for this.
