Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (4,500')

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, after proceeding through customs and immigration, you will be met by our guide and representative and then transferred to Haatiban Resort (6,100'), which is an hour's drive through the lovely countryside. Located to the south-west at around 1,300 feet above the valley, the resort's peaceful environment and superb views are most welcoming after a long flight.

  • Dinner
  • Accomodation:Haatiban Resort

Day 2: Day hike to Champadevi (7,500')

Today we'll take an early morning hike up Champadevi hill, from the top of which we'll enjoy stunning panoramic views of the mountains stretching from Manaslu in the west all the way towards the eastern Himalaya—a real treat. The afternoon is yours to either relax at the hotel, or do some sightseeing in the nearby villages of Pharping and Dakshinkali. (Hiking time: 3 - 4 hours)

  • Breakfast/Dinner
  • Accomodation:Haatiban Resort

Day 3: Sightseeing at Swayambhunath and drive to Summit River Lodge

This morning we'll drive for about an hour from the resort to the monkey temple of Swayambhunath. After exploring this splendid temple, we'll drive from Kathmandu along a scenic highway through the middle hills, descending to the Trisuli River and along its banks to Kurintar, a journey of approximately 3 hours. We'll leave our vehicle at the riverside and cross the river on a pedestrian bridge to the village of Thuguwatar-on-Trisuli. Here the village homes are strung out along the edges of a flat, fertile expanse of farmland, with the forested hills blanketing their northern slopes. We will walk through the village for about 30 minutes to reach our accomodation for the night, a lodge situated on an isolated spur of the hills that slopes down steeply towards the Trisuli River, affording great views of natural forest, flowing waters, terraced fields, and the mountains that encircle us. For those interested in rafting, we will stop at Majhimtar to enjoy a fun 9-mile ride on the Trisuli River (approximately 3 hrs). The rafting journey will end just below below the lodge.

  • Breakfast/Dinner
  • Accomodation:Summit River Lodge

Day 4: Excursion to Manakamana Temple (4,300')

After breakfast, we'll take a 45-minute drive to the town on Abu Khaireni, the starting point for our walk to the mountain-top shrine of Manakamana, the Wish-Fulfilling Goddess of primeval times. Worn through the ages by the feet of many pilgrims long before the advent of the cable car that now ferries visitors to the shrine, the walk is over terrain covered with gardens of tangerine and other citrus trees. The temple itself is old, though the town that has grown around it is very new, having sprung up as a result of the cable car installation. Here the shrine is attended by Magar tribal priests rather than the traditional Brahmin who are the usual custodians of Hindu temples. On certain days of the week pilgrims sacrifice goats to appease the Goddess, or release pigeons in her honor, seeking her acquiescence for their desires. A trail descends to the valley below, but we'll return by cable car (10 minute ride down) and transfer back to the lodge. (Hiking time:  3-4 hours)

  • Breakfast/Dinner
  • Accomodation:Summit River Lodge

Day 5: Village walk

For the nature enthusiast, today's walk into the hills to visit the village homes of the Chepang and Magars will be a treat. We'll wake to the sounds of bird calls and the occasional echo of a woodcutter’s Hulloa in the hills around us. The trail is a bit steep to begin with, but the village homes above are as yet unscathed by the modernity a road generally brings. Views from here are wonderful: cataracts cascade off the hills into narrow gorges, villagers attend to collecting fodder for their domestic animals, chattering, book-laden children in school uniforms traipse off to class, and butterflies of myriad varieties flitter along the trail. We may come across a village woman at her still, making an alcoholic brew from fermented barley. In the afternoon we'll make our way slowly back to the highway for our transfer to Kathmandu (60 miles). (Hiking time:  3-4 hours)
