Day 1: Chiang Mai

Fly to Chiang Mai from Bangkok, Mandalay or elsewhere.  You will be welcomed by your local guide and transferred to your hotel.

In the afternoon, explore the ancient town of Chiang Mai, including its old city walls, gates, moat and markets. After visiting the historic Jed Yod Temple, “the viharn with 7 peaks”, we drive up the mountain by “songtaew” to the Chang Khien Coffee Research Project where you can enjoy a cup of the local ‘arabica’ surrounded by fabulous gardens. Continue to the white Hmong village of Chang Khien, where the 800 inhabitants still wear their traditional hill tribe clothes and practice a culture that dates back 500 years, and then end the day at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the temple on the mountain, and the most sacred in Northern Thailand. After a private blessing ceremony, witness the magical evening chanting of the monks.

  • Breakfast
  • Accomodation:Tamarind Village

Day 2: Chiang Mai

Drive north of Chiang Mai, through a hilly, forested area to the Chiang Dao Young Elephants Training Camp (~1-1/2 hours).  We ride these beautiful ancient animals, as they take a slow walk with their mahouts (elephant owners) through the forest and across streams. Enjoy a local lunch before boarding a bamboo raft for a gentle ride down the Ping River. We then venture further north to explore a Palong hilltribe village. Our scenic drive takes us past local schools, farmland, temples and orchids. We take a walk around the village to learn about their culture and view their extensive herb gardens, then up to a scenic viewpoint with sweeping views of Chiang Dao’s breathtaking mountainous area.

Return to Chiang Mai.

Day 3: Chiang Mai

Get an early start and head to the old city. At Ton Payom market, we will purchase dishes and then join the locals during the daily alms giving ceremony to the monks. Afterwards enjoy a delicious breakfast. Proceed to Wat Umong, a heavily forested temple, which offers a unique yet charming sense of natural decay. After a walk through its mysterious tunnels, we reach the temple viharn where we experience our own private blessing ceremony. Continue to Wat Suan Dok, which is famous for its whitewashed Lanna stupas. The International Buddhist Studies Center adjacent to the temple offers a unique opportunity to learn and informally exchange ideas with the monks about Buddhism and other general topics.

We have lunch at a local restaurant, which aims to elevate “Khao Soy” curry noodles from its street food status to its rightful place as the signature dish of northern Thai cuisine. In the afternoon, take a long-tail boat and enjoy a 30-minute cruise along the rural Mae Ping River. Along the river banks, you will see traditional wooden houses and modern residences. Visit a local market, then take a trishaw ride along Tapae Road passing City Walls to Wat Phra Singh.
