South-central France is harboring a secret—an Eden-like landscape of rivers and lakes, thick forests, and dramatic pinnacles. Though Robert Louis Stevenson immortalized this region in his classic story Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes,it’s remained well off the beaten path. Join us on a journey to the hidden corners of the Massif Central, from ancient villages undiscovered by tourists to high plateaus carpeted with wildflowers.In the company of Laurent Langoisseur, Stephane Berger, Florence Simond (our most popular Alps guides), you’ll enjoy spectacularly scenic hikes each day, with plenty of time for a leisurely picnic lunch or browsing a farmers market. Beginning in lovely, historic Lyon and ending in the medieval jewel of Avignon, this itinerary will leave you truly enchanted.

Day 1: Arrive in Lyon, France

Plan to arrive in Lyon, France where your guides will meet you at the airport or the train station, and transfer to our hotel in town. We'll enjoy an afternoon tour of historic Lyon with a local guide, before having an evening orientation and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Hike to Arlempdes

Today we'll transfer to the Monastier sur Gazeille (2.5 hours), where we begin hiking over a lush plateau to the Velay village of Goudet. As we descend towards the scenic, stone village of Arlempdes, we'll be treated to sweeping views overlooking the Loire River. After our hike, we'll transfer to the Hotel Domaine des Barres in Langogne. (7 miles hiking)

Day 3: Hike to Le Cheylard l'Evêque

After breakfast, we'll hike from our hotel along an easy trail to St. Flour, and the beautiful beech forest of Mercoire. We'll then descend to the village of Le Cheylard l'Evêque, and its lovely chapel — a perfect location for our nice picnic lunch. In the afternoon, we'll transfer to Le Bleymard (35 minutes) and to the Hotel La Remise.  Those who prefer a little more hiking can opt to hike from the Lot River spring to our hotel. (8 miles hiking)

Day 4: Hike to the Top of Mont Lozere

After a 20-minute morning transfer to the Col de Finiels, we'll hike up and along a wide ridge of Mont Lozere to the Laubies summit, where views in all directions await.  We'll then descend to the Barandon Lake, where we can stop for a snack and to enjoy the scenery.  A 25-minute transfer then takes us to the Hotel La Lozerette in Cocures. (12 miles hiking)

Day 5: Hike to the Heart of Cevennes National Park

After breakfast, we'll start with a short 20-minute transfer to Pont de Montvert, near the heart of the Cevennes region. From here, we'll hike up to the Col du Sapet for a picnic lunch with rewarding views. A short afternoon transfer will bring us to Florac in Cevennes National Park, where we will visit the charming town before we return to the Hotel La Lozerette. (7 miles hiking)

Day 6: Hike to Germain de Calberte

We'll begin the day with a short 30-minute transfer to Cassagnas, from where we will hike up to the Col des Laubies and Col de la Pierre Plantée.  We'll then continue on to the town of St. Germain de Calberte. In the afternoon we'll transfer to Mialet and the Hotel Le Pradinas on the Gardon River. (7.5 miles hiking)

Day 7: Uzes – Pont du Gard – Avignon

Our morning transfer brings us to the lovely town of Uzes (1.5 hours). We'll have some time to explore this charming cobblestone village, with numerous shops, cafes, and wonderful farmers' market. After lunch, we'll continue on to the famous Pont du Gard where we will have a brief tour, and then on to the historic and charming town of Avignon. Tonight we will enjoy a festive farewell dinner in Avignon.

Day 8: Depart from Avignon, France

After breakfast, we'll transfer to the Avignon TGV train station where we say farewell.

DAILY itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Lyon, France
