This journey lets you hike the most beautiful parts of the Alpe Adria, from the highest summits down to lush valleys, past mountain lakes and rivers with turquoise-green water. As you go, you’ll experience the memorable landscapes, rich cultures, and local cuisines of three different countries—Austria, Italy, and Slovenia—and discover inspiring landmarks such as the Garnet Gate and mountaintop Sanctuary Monte Lussari. With views of the Adriatic Sea, the Italian town of Trieste provides the perfect ending to an unforgettable trip.

Day 1: Arrive in Salzburg

Start your journey in Salzburg, one of the most beautiful cities of Austria, if not the whole Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mozart’s birthplace, and the setting for the movie The Sound of Music, Salzburg has a charming baroque Old Town with a formidable fortress looming above. You’ll meet with your group at 3pm in the afternoon for a trip orientation and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Alpine hiking on the Alpe Adria

After a scenic, two-hour drive from Salzburg, we’ll reach Hohe Tauern National Park, where we’ll take our inaugural hike amidst alpine meadows and peaks and enjoy a typical Austrian lunch. We’ll then transfer to the village of Heiligenblut at the foot of Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak at 12,461 feet. This is a perfect starting point for Alpe Adria experience.

Day 3: First stage of the Alpe Adria

Today, we’ll get our first taste of the Alpe-Adria Trail, starting our full-day hike right next to the famous Kaiser-Franz-Josefs Alpine Road, with its incredible panoramas. Our route takes us on the Pasterze Glacier Trail, walking on sometimes steep hairpin bends, passing waterfalls and looking down to the edge of the glacier. After reaching the Grossglocker view point, we'll slowly descend the same way, having a sip of spring water if we feel like it. In the evening, we’ll try some local lamb and beef dishes, which is especially tender as local farmers take their cattle up to 6,000-foot high alpine pastures.

Day 4: Mount Steinerner Tisch and Lake Millstatt

Today’s adventure centers around Lake Millstatt, starting with a scenic hike to Steinerner Tisch, a massive stone table that sits 6,000 feet above the lake with stunning, panoramic views. Legend has it that giants once lived in the grass-covered mountains here! We’ll stop at the local high alpine farmer to sample some of their products. In the afternoon, we’ll check into our hotel located on the shores of the Lake Milstatt, where we’ll enjoy a peaceful sunset and local wine grown in Italy, just on the other side of the mountain ridge.

Day 5: Path of Love - Millstatter Lake

Take in fabulous views as we climb the so-called Path of Love to the Garnet Gate, an impressive cubist sculpture at the summit that overlooks Lake Milstatt below. The hike across the lush Alpine meadows along the Millstätter Alpe Ridge is a feast for the senses. Afterward, enjoy freshly baked bread with local spreads and salami.

Day 6: Experience three countries and a mountaintop sanctuary

Today, we’ll experience how the Alpe-Adria Trail connects Austria, Italy and Slovenia, all in one day. We’ll cross from Austria over into Italy, where we’ll hike along a pilgrims’ path to the mountaintop Sanctuary Monte Lussari, a pilgrimage church with breathtaking views of the Valbruna Valley. We’ll end the night in Slovenia at Kranjska Gora, a picturesque ski village that prides itself as the host of FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup.

Day 7: Ascend to the highest mountain pass in Slovenia

This morning we’ll hike up to Vršič (5,738'), the highest mountain pass in Slovenia with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. As we climb along the scenic, alpine trail, we might even come across some mountain sheep. Later on, we’ll descend into the Soca Valley, following the stream of the turquoise-green Soča River to the town of Bovec. We'll overnight in a charming villa.

Day 8: Explore Soča Valley and Triglav National Park

Today, we’ll hike in the Soča Valley, following the Soča River through unspoiled parts of Triglav National Park. Famous for the WWI Battle of Isonzo vividly described in Ernest Hemingway's novel, A Farewell to Arms, Soča is now known as a playground for hikers, cyclists, and water enthusiasts. After trying some local cheeses, we’ll end our day amongst the vineyards with some fresh-cut prosciutto and a glass of local red wine.

Day 9: Hike in the Valley of Rosanda and in Trieste

Last but not least, we head back to Italy to for a four-hour hike in the Valley of Rosanda. This unique natural reserve is known for its karst landscape and mild, Mediterranean climate. We’ll end our tour in Trieste, a special place that has been on a crossroad of Latin, Slavic and German culture for over two thousand years. For our final meal together, we’ll enjoy a farewell feast of local Italian specialties.

Day 10: Depart from Trieste

Day 1: Arrive in Salzburg
