The Spain of legend involves dining on paella and tapas, drinking rioja, and dancing flamenco till the wee hours. That is all entirely feasible in passion-fueled Barcelona, and best experienced after exploring the fantastical architecture of Antoni Gaudí, centuries-old cathedrals, and art museums full of works by Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. But Spain has much to offer the outdoor adventurer, as well. Follow the path of the Camino de Santiago, an epic quest that takes travelers across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela, the burial place of St. James. Or hike across the Pyrenees, taking in the views at Ordesa National Park and visiting the monastery at Montserrat along the way. For an off-the-beaten path adventure, hike the Picos de Europa, a mountain range with dramatic limestone spires towering above canyons, alpine meadows, and beech forest. Along the way, you can discover smaller towns and cities, such as Pamplona, famous for the running of the bulls, and Burgos, the home of El Cid. Art lovers will appreciate the Basque city of Bilbao, home of the contemporary Guggenheim Museum and a buzzing art district. The Basque country is also highly regarded for its delicious pintxos (Basque tapas), which are truly an art form of their own.
MTS has three adventures in Spain, including hiking in the stunning Pyrenees and Picos de Europa, and walking the ever-popular Camino de Santiago pilgrim's trail—great for both solo travelers and groups!
