Day 1: Welcome to Buenos Aires

Welcome to cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina! After clearing customs and collecting your luggage, an MTS representative will meet you and the rest of the group, and transfer you to your elegant hotel in the Recoleta neighborhood. After a brief orientation meeting this afternoon, we’ll head out to explore the traditional neighborhoods of the city by foot, stopping to see Monserrat and the Plaza de Mayo and the art district of San Telmo, with its lively street fair. Tonight, the group will gather for a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Fly to Bariloche in Argentina's Lake District

Enjoy a morning walk through Buenos Aires’ northern neighborhoods, stopping to see the famous Recoleta Cemetery and the traditional cafés by Plaza Francia. We’ll then transfer back to the Buenos Aires airport to board our flight to Bariloche, one of the most celebrated towns of Argentina’s Lake District, surrounded by the snowcapped peaks of the Andes and a beautiful glacial lake. Upon arrival we'll drive to our elegant hotel and spa on the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake, a few miles away from Bariloche. Tonight, we’ll enjoy the hotel’s traditional Argentinian restaurant, where dishes are cooked in a clay oven or on the grill.

Day 3: Paddle glacial Gutierrez Lake and take a forest hike

After breakfast, we’ll depart for the shore of Gutierrez Lake—a protected lake at the foothills of the Cathedral mountain range. After getting familiar with the gear and listening to a safety talk from our guide, we’ll start paddling on flat water following the shoreline. We'll stop at a pristine beach for a picnic lunch and finish the paddle. Next we'll head for Llao Llao where we will hike through a magnificent forest and enjoy great views of the surrounding lakes and mountains, namely Cerro Lopez, Cerro Capilla, Lago Moreno, Lago Nahuel Huapi, and Brazo Tristeza. We’ll return to our hotel late this afternoon. The rest of the evening is free to relax and dine on your own at one of the many fine restaurants in Bariloche.

Day 4: Take a scenic drive for a full day hike at Mt. Tronador

This morning is a scenic drive (2 hours) along the shore of Gutierrez and Mascardi Lakes to  Pampa Linda Valley at the foot of Mt. Tronador. ( 11,632’ ) From there we set  on foot  on the trails that lead us into the Castaño Overa Glacier Valley, ascending  gradually  alongside a forest of Cohihue trees, true Patagonian giants, Towards the end of the trail each step upward opening to more impressive views of  the mountain. Our destination is the very end of the valley  at the foot of the impressive 1200 ft waterfalls falling from upper  hanging glaciers. It is not uncommon to see magnificent condors soaring above with their 10’ wing spans.  Back at the green pastures of Pampa Linda  we relax over a glass of wine or  the favorite  local beer, before driving back to the lodge for a relaxing evening.

Day 5: Go deep into Patagonia and explore El Chaltén

This morning, we’ll head to Bariloche airport to board our flight to El Calafate, a small city along the southern border of Lake Argentino, flanked by the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. We’ll enjoy a scenic 2½-hour drive to El Chalten, traveling past Viedma Lake and the Fitz Roy Massif. En route, we’ll stop for lunch at a well-known crossroads in the middle of the Patagonian steppes, and a meeting point for the first wool caravans that traveled across the region.

The village of El Chaltén is our home for the next three nights, and our base for some of the most fabulous hiking trails in Patagonia. Our beautiful hotel is located in an exquisite valley surrounded by stunning mountains and offers plenty of modern amenities. Upon arrival, we’ll opt for a short walks around town or a stop by the local pub before dinner. Be on the lookout for the famous calafate berry; legend has it that one bite is enough to secure your return visit to Patagonia! Tonight, we’ll dine in the hotel’s restaurant, which offers both traditional and international dishes.

Day 6: Trek glacial valleys to Cerro Torre

Today we’ll begin trekking along the glacial valley that takes us to Cerro Torre Base Camp. The iconic pointy peak of Cerro Torre is situated on the border of Argentina and Chile on South America’s southern ice field. The peak is so treacherous that it wasn’t until 1974 that climbers were able to successfully summit it. Fortunately, we’ll be trekking the moderate trails below! The effort is absolutely worth it; once we reach base camp, we’ll enjoy one of the most amazing views of Cerro Torre’s South Face with its lake and hanging glaciers, along with the Egger and Standhard spires—said to be one of the finest views in Patagonia. 
This afternoon, we’ll return back to our hotel in El Chaltén. The rest of the evening is free to relax and dine at your leisure.

Day 7: Enjoy amazing views of Mount Fitz Roy, Mount Saint Exupery and Poincenot Peaks

Take a scenic morning drive north of town to a trailhead that marks the start of our hike. First we'll walk into the valley of Rio Electrico where, weather permitting, we'll get great views of Marconi and Piedras Blancas Glacier. As we follow the path, we'll keep an eye out for the bright-red crest of the large Magellanic Woodpecker. Next we’ll unwind and enjoy a picnic lunch at Poincenot Camp, a famous starting point for some of Patagonia’s most scenic hikes. From there, we’ll continue on to Laguna Capri enjoying incredible views of Mount Fitz Roy, Mount Saint Exupery and Poincenot Peaks. For those feeling more ambitious, there is an optional hike from Poincenot Camp that will lead us up one last steep hill to Laguna de los Tres—a worthwhile effort for its superb views of Mount Fitz Roy and its hanging glaciers. This is a very challenging hike for those who are physically capable. We’ll return to our hotel in El Chaltén in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Hike through La Leona Petrified Forest

Hike through La Leona Petrified Forest This morning, we’ll leave El Chaltén and drive south to Estancia La Leona, where we'll hike through an amazing petrified forest and enjoy a picnic lunch. La Leona Petrified Forest needs to be seen to be believed. Composed of large petrified tree trunks, some of which stretch as long as four feet in diameter, the forest is a living museum of paleontological history where we can see fragments of fossilized dinosaur bones. During the early afternoon, we’ll continue to the town of El Calafate for a  quick coffee break . One hour of winding gravel roads brings us to Estancia Nibepo Aike, an authentic Patagonian cattle ranch stunningly located in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, our home for the next two nights. Late afternoon easy horseback ride to some of the Estancia’s most amazing spots at the foothills of the Andes. Tonight we'll dine at the ranch.

Day 9: Ice trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier

Ice trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier Today we'll set off for a drive along the southern arm of Lago Argentino, where we’ll set sail by catamaran across the lake to begin our ice trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier (please note age limitation and alternative option for this activity*). The first part of our hike follows the lakeshore moraines to the side of the Glacier, where we’ll strap on crampons and walk into a surreal expanse of jagged peaks and neon-blue crevasses. After enjoying a box lunch on the ice, we’ll return by catamaran, snapping photos of the glacier’s front wall and fallen icebergs. During the early afternoon, we’ll stop at a scenic overlook facing the Canal de los Tempanos, the narrow water channel that separates the peninsula from the huge mass of ice.. This evening, we’ll learn the secrets of a traditional lamb barbecue as we sip deep, earthy Argentine Malbecs.

*The Perito Moreno Ice trek is available for guests aged 65 or younger. As an alternative option, you can walk along 2 miles of extensive footbridges that follows the various channels of the glacier and gives you different viewpoints of this amazing natural wonder.

Day 10: Return to Buenos Aires

After breakfast, we’ll drive back to El Calafate to enjoy some leisure time in town before continuing to the airport to board an early afternoon flight to Buenos Aires. Once we arrive in Buenos Aires, we’ll transfer back to our elegant hotel in the Recoleta district and then gather together for a farewell dinner at our favorite restaurant.

Day 11: Explore Buenos Aires in the morning and depart

The morning is free to explore the city on your own, visit its museums and parks, and enjoy a last bite of Argentinian cuisine. This afternoon, we’ll all transfer to Buenos Aires airport to board our flights home.
