Day 1: Arrive in Salvador de Bahia

Welcome to Salvador de Bahia! After a private transfer from the airport to the hotel, you can explore the city's brightly colored houses and pretty colonial streets—you may even see a capoiera performance or Olodum drummers as you wander by. As the first capital of Brazil, from 1549 to 1763, Salvador de Bahia witnessed the blending of European, African and Amerindian cultures and, today, the city is known for its strong Afro-Brazilian culture.

Day 2: Explore the old colonial town of Lençóis

After breakfast, we'll take a transfer flight to Lençóis, an old diamond-mining town with a well-preserved colonial atmosphere—and a good starting point for treks into Chapada Diamantina National Park. The park was established in the 1980s in response to growing ecotourism and named after diamonds found in the hills in the 19th century. Its stunning landscape is a mix of canyons, gorges and mountains, with winding rivers and cascading waterfalls speckled throughout, and an abundance of flowers and grasses. For spectacular views of Chapada Diamantina's characteristic table-top mountains, we'll visit “Morro do Pai Inácio” (4,068'), or Father Ignacio's Hill, in the afternoon on Day 1 and stay until the sun sets. Tonight we'll settle into the fantastic Hotel Canto das Aguas in Lençóis.

Day 3: Take a waterfall hike to the top of Cachoeira da Fumaça

Today we set out for the remote and magical Capão Valley, where we'll take a 7½-mile return hike to the top of the stunning Cachoeira da Fumaça. Also known as Smoke Falls for its beautiful smoke-like spray that rises with the wind, Cachoeira da Fumaça is one of the highest waterfalls in Brazil with a 1,115-foot drop. After our return from the hike, we'll be treated to very special accommodations at the charming Villa Lagoa das Cores located in the Capão Valley.

Day 4: Take a scenic day hike in Chapada Diamantina

After a hearty breakfast we'll begin our scenic day walk in Chapada Diamantina National Park. Our 12½-mile (7 hour) hike will take us from the Capão Valley to Guiné and pass the pretty fields of Gerais do Vieira and Gerais do Rio Preto. Here we'll be treated to stunning views of the Pati Valley, considered one of the most beautiful valleys in Brazil! At the end of the hike we'll transfer to the small village of Igatu.

Day 5: Visit the breathtaking Cachoeira do Buracão waterfall

Today we'lll travel 2½ hours south of Chapada Diamantina National Park to Ibicoara, where we'll take a 4-mile return walk to the amazing Cachoeira do Buracão. This breathtaking waterfall, aptly named Big Hole Waterfall, rises more than 330ft inside an impressive canyon and is a well-loved local treasure. After our picnic lunch, we'll visit Xique-Xique de Igatu, a small village known the "Brazilian Machu Picchu” for its old stone houses, many of which have been eerily overgrown by vegetation since the town's 19th-century diamond rush heyday.

Day 6: Return to Salvador de Bahia

After breakfast we'll take a private transfer to Lençóis airport and fly to Salvador de Bahia, where we'll stay for the last few days of the trip.

Day 7: Wander Salvador de Bahia's UNESCO-listed historic center

Today we'll explore Pelourinho, the colorful UNESCO-listed historical center of Salvador de Bahia. Rich in historical monuments dating from the Portuguese colonial period and an important symbol of Bahia's Afro-Brazilian heritage, Pelourinho is both architecturally and culturally inspiring. We'll have the opportunity to see its brightly painted houses and take in its musical and cultural attractions around Largo do Pelourinho, including its churches, museums, artists’ studios, galleries, shops and restaurants. Among the top sights are Mercado Modelo, the most important regional marketplace, Jorge Amado’s House, Olodum’s House, Sao Francisco and Cathedral Church, Cravinho Bar, and Elevador  Lacerda, which connects upper  town  to downtown, and offers panoramic views of All Saints Bay and Mercado Modelo. We'll also stop to shop and visit the Pierre Verger gallery, where Bahia textile designer Goya Lopes uses African-Brazilian music as inspiration for his pieces. The rest of the day is yours to bask in the "land of happiness!"
