Arrive in Anchorage and transfer directly to your hotel for an evening at your leisure. Your accommodation for the evening was inducted into the Historic Hotels of America for its history, architecture, and ambiance, and features several restaurants, an art collection featuring Captain James Cook. If you arrive early in the day, enjoy the central location which gives you ready access to downtown Anchorage.
After breakfast, head to the Anchorage rail station to board the Aurora train to Talkeetna. Experience the serenity of backcountry Alaska in winter from the comfort of a warm rail car with comfortable seats and large picture windows perfect for taking in the breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can see the spectacular Denali as it rises into view above the Susitna River. Anywhere along the tracks, a watchful eye may be rewarded with the sight of wild moose. At the Talkeetna Rail Station, join with your private transfer to downtown Talkeetna for some lunch before your afternoon dog sledding adventure.
Visit the homestead of Iditarod Champion Dallas Seavey in Talkeetna and tour his kennel with over 90 sled dogs. The visit begins at the kennel headquarters overlooking the dog yard and snowy boreal forest you'll mush through. Get a hook-up and sled driving demo from your guide, then enjoy a six mile mush on the same trails where Dallas trains his Iditarod team. Each two guests will share a dog sled and dog team of Alaskan Huskies. Or if you prefer, choose to ride with an experienced mushing guide instead. Guide your team through the silent snow-capped birch and spruce forest, where the only sounds are paws pounding, the sled's runners gliding across the snow and the occasional excited bark. After your ride and photo opportunities, get a tour of the homestead and kennel operations, and spend time with husky puppies. After a full day of adventure, check in to your lodge for the night. Local transportation will be provided to and from your accommodations and to local restaurants that may feature evening entertainment.
After breakfast head to Talkeetna Airport and board your private helicopter for the Sheldon Chalet. Enjoy your scenic flight landing in the Don Sheldon Amphitheater of Denali's magnificent Ruth Glacier, just 10 miles from the summit. The Chalet is perched on a nunatak within the Don Sheldon Amphitheater with spectacular views of craggy mountains, blankets of powder and ice, and no sign of civilization.
Upon arrival, have an orientation with staff to prepare for your activities for the next three days. Your guides will properly fit you with gear (climbing harness, snowshoes, helmet and poles) for Glacier School and provide instruction on glacier safety, rope team etiquette and what to expect for the adventure of the day. No previous mountaineering experience is necessary. There is something for everyone at the Chalet.
Choose your own adventure! Winter at Sheldon Chalet allows for prime night sky viewing, full moon glacier treks, cozy fireside evenings and comforting saunas. While at Sheldon Chalet you can also pursue other guided activities such as: snow shoe trekking, crevasse exploration, snow cavern spelunking, ¼ mile sledding runs, rappelling, aurora viewing, and star and meteor shower gazing. Your guides will advise you of the conditions and work with you to set up the ideal activities for your day - and starry night!
Today continue with your own guided activities. A unique kind of exploration at Sheldon Chalet is called "Adventure in Place". The majestic location invites you to experience a peace and calm that will relax and refresh your spirit. The isolation provides the rare opportunity to luxuriate in silence and stillness. Adventure in Place on deck, around the fire pit surrounded by grandeur, in the relaxing sauna with views of Denali's summit, or inside the comfort of the Chalet. There is something for everyone and activities for every level.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning, then board your private helicopter back to Talkeetna. Upon arrival at the private aircraft base, you'll meet with your private transfer to the Anchorage International Airport to connect with your departing flight and return home.
