  • Arrive in Las Vegas

    Day 1

    Welcome to Las Vegas! Upon arrival in Las Vegas, take a complimentary shuttle transfer to the hotel. Meet up with the group for orientation and a welcome dinner at 6pm.

    Accommodation: Hyatt Place Las Vegas

    Ideally located near the Las Vegas Airport, Hyatt Place Las Vegas is a modern hotel with a milder approach to the gambling capital of the world. The hotel features smoke-free, quiet, modern guest rooms each with comfortable beds, cutting-edge media and work centers, mini-refrigerators and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel also offers a fitness center, outdoor pool, complimentary parking, complimentary shuttle service from the airport and an on-site restaurant.

  • Hoover Dam & The Grand Canyon

    Day 2

    After breakfast, meet your MT Sobek trip leader in the lobby at 8am and depart for the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression. Following our visit to the Hoover Dam, we continue 4 hours to the Grand Canyon South Rim.

    This afternoon, we will bike along the Canyon rim on a road closed to public vehicle traffic. This scenic stretch of road features some of the best views along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Following our bike ride, we will settle in to our hotel in nearby Tusayan.

    Accommodation: The Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon

    The Grand Hotel is conveniently located in Tusayan, just six miles from the rim of the Grand Canyon. The hotel features comfortable accommodations with luxury mattresses, refrigerators, microwaves, high speed internet and upgraded amenities. The hotel also offers an indoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, gift shop, a business center and an on-site restaurant and saloon. The hotel is also within walking distance of several restaurants and the Grand Canyon Visitors Center and IMAX theater.

  • Descend into the Grand Canyon

    Day 3

    Enjoy a full day exploring Grand Canyon National Park. Descend into the canyon on a hike on the famed South Kaibab Trail. Along the way learn about the unique ecosystem, the deep Native American connection to the Canyon and the wonders of this special place. Expect sweeping views, ancient rocks, fossils, curious critters, and diverse plant life. Stop mid-day for a picnic lunch. Explore some of the historic buildings and scenic view points along the canyon rim in the afternoon.

    The Grand Hotel is conveniently located in Tusayan, just six miles from the rim of the Grand Canyon.   • Kayak Lake Powell's Slot Canyons

    Day 4

    We depart the Grand Canyon early this morning and have a scenic three hour drive to Page where we embark on our overnight kayaking trip on Lake Powell. The journey begins with a scenic boat ride to Padre Bay where we will begin kayaking. Spend the day exploring the remote slot canyons and coves of Lake Powell.

    This evening we make camp amid the majestic scenery.

    Accommodation: MT Sobek Camp – Lake Powell

    Rest up from your day's adventure in comfortable camps outfitted with tents and sleeping pads. Delicious food is served each night, and guests can enjoy a selection of fare before retiring to their tents for a good night's rest.

    Activity: 3-4 hour kayaking

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Lake Powell & Stargazing at Bryce Canyon

    Day 5

    After a hearty camp breakfast, we will have another adventurous day of exploring Lake Powell by kayak. We return to the marina in early afternoon and head to our overnight accommodations near Bryce Canyon National Park. After dinner we are joined by an astronomer for a special stargazing experience. The Utah desert's predictable weather, low humidity and dark night skies make it the perfect location for viewing the Milky Way Galaxy, millions of stars, recognizable constellations and even some far off galaxies millions of light years away.

    The Best Western Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel offers the newest upscale accommodations for visitors to Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park. The hotel features two four-story towers featuring 164 luxurious guest rooms, exercise facilities, and a full-service restaurant. The enclosed courtyard offers guest privacy for the pool, whirlpool, and patio areas.

  • Horseback Ride in Bryce Canyon National Park & Hike to Emerald Pools

    Day 6

    This morning, we descend into the natural amphitheater of Bryce Canyon National Park on horseback. Depart Sunrise Point and experience the Wall of Windows, The Chessmen, Silent City, and the Bristle Cone Pine Trees (some of the oldest living things on earth). Then we enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic overlook before we depart for Zion National Park. This afternoon, we hike the Emerald Pools Trail taking in the views of Red Arch Mountain, Lady Mountain and the colorful cliffs in every direction.

    Accommodation: Driftwood Lodge

    Driftwood Lodge is located in Springdale, less than two miles from Zion National Park. The lodge features comfortable accommodations with incredible canyon views. The Kings Landing Bistro offers a seasonal menu for dinner nightly.

    Activity: 2 hours horseback riding, 1-2 hours hiking

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Zion National Park

    Day 7

    We start our day at Zion National Park with a canyoneering excursion which starts with a short hike followed by active exploration of some of the areas narrow slot canyons. Canyoneering involves a combination of hiking, rappelling, scrambling and possibly wading through canyon pools. Canyoneering is a perfect family bonding experience with interactive problem solving of natural canyon obstacles. Most routes offer more beauty than physical challenges making for a fun and rewarding adventure. This afternoon, we take a leisurely hike along the the Virgin River and cool off with a splash in the cool waters.

    Accommodation: Driftwood Lodge

    Driftwood Lodge is located in Springdale, less than two miles from Zion National Park. The lodge features comfortable accommodations with incredible canyon views. The Kings Landing Bistro offers a seasonal menu for dinner nightly.

    Activity: Half day canyoneering, 1-2 hours hiking

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Depart Las Vegas

    Day 8

    After breakfast we depart for Las Vegas to catch afternoon homebound flights.

When Rachel is not on the road leading adventures she can be found relaxing in Bali, surfing, doing yoga and rejuvenating.

However, his heart belongs to the open roads of the National Parks of the United States. Michael embarked on his tour guiding career 13 years ago in Los Angeles, California. He operated coast to coast camping and lodging tours in the United States and the Canadian Rockies. He now migrates between Alaska and the great North American deserts. Michael believes Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Death Valley, and all the lovely arches, salt flats, and ghost towns in between are some of the most special places on Earth.

FAQ

Do I need kayaking, horseback riding or canyoneering experience to take this trip?

No previous experience is required. You will receive all the training while travelling to enjoy your activities.

Will it be hot in the Southwest during the summer?

Yes, but we plan the activities so you are most active in the cooler hours of the day.

How should I train for my trip?

The best training is hiking. Work up to hiking similar distances with your daypack loaded with the same weight you will be carrying on your day hikes.

What kind of wildlife am I likely to see?

Wildlife commonly seen includes: Mule Deer, Utah Prairie Dogs, Chipmunks, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels, Pronghorn (antelope), Gray Fox, Ravens, Steller's Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers, Red-tailed Hawks, Turkeys, and Mountain Short-horned Lizards. Black Bear, Elk, and Mountain Lions are rarely seen.
