Noatak River Canoe Adventure

Trip Length 10 days

From $5,595

  • Take an epic 50-mile canoe ride down the Noatak—a designated National Wild & Scenic River
  • Witness the tundra's colorful autumnal glory and see wildlife migrating south through the stunning valley
  • Enjoy magnificent views as you fly by floatplane from Bettles to Gates of the Arctic National Park—one of our favorite scenic flights!

Take an amazing 50-mile river journey on the swift-flowing Noatak River, deep in the Gates of the Arctic National Park. Designated as one of the few Wild & Scenic Rivers in North America, the Noatak is a wonder with its surrounding snowcapped peaks and glacial valleys, which come alive in autumn when the tundra blazes with color. During this time, small bands of caribou from Alaska's most impressive herd, the 400,000-member Western Arctic herd, travel the river as they begin their migration south to winter below the Arctic tree line. On this adventure, you'll spend four to six days floating on the river, with the remaining days spent on foot exploring the dramatic upper Noatak and its scenic tributary valleys. This trip also includes one of the most breathtaking floatplane flights from Bettles to the headwaters of the Noatak River.

Day 1: Travel deep into Gates of the Arctic National Park

After picking you up from your lodging in downtown Fairbanks, we'll head to the airport for our 1½-hour flight to the small bush community of Bettles. Situated just above the Arctic Circle on the Koyukuk River, Bettles is the jumping-off point for our journey to the headwaters of the Noatak. By early afternoon, we'll board a floatplane for an incredbly scenic flight into Gates of the Arctic National Park. We'll land on an oxbow lake and begin our short portage to the bank of the Noatak River, where we'll set up camp.

  • Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodation:MTS Private Camp

Days 2-9: Canoe and hike in the scenic Noatak River Valley

Over the course of eight days, we'll enjoy a flexible itinerary that allows us to fully explore the beauty of Noatak River Valley. We'll enjoy a leisurely 50-mile canoe ride on the swift-flowing river and explore more of the glacial valley on foot. Immense sweeps of tundra make this area ideal for hiking,  and the surrounding ridges and tributary valleys provide us with incredible scenic vistas of the river and surrounding peaks. We'll camp on riverbanks and unwind to the peaceful sound of babbling water. On the last two nights, we'll camp at our take out lake and enjoy spectacular hikes from our basecamp. The portage from the river to the lake, where the float plane will pick us up, is about a ¼ mile.

  • Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner
  • Accommodation:MTS Private Camp

Day 10: Return to Fairbanks

After a hearty breakfast, we'll fly back to Bettles and then head south to Fairbanks. We plan to arrive in Fairbanks by late afternoon, around 5pm.
