Covid-19 Information & Vaccination Requirements
To keep our travelers, guides, and local communities healthy and safe, we’ve developed and implemented enhanced sanitation and distancing protocols. Please read our COVID-19 vaccination policy below.
The health of our guests, guides, and local communities is of paramount importance to us.
On all 2022 small group scheduled departures and international Custom/Private departures, we require:
- All guests to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please upload your vaccine record to our guest portal.
- All guests under 5 years old to be tested within 72 hours prior to traveling with us, regardless of regional entry requirements. You can find the testing site closest to you here. Please upload the negative PCR or Rapid Antigen test result taken within 72 hours of trip start. Proof should include the child’s name, test type, date of the test, and the result.
For the safety of our guests, guides, and the residents of the places we visit, you must provide these documents to be able to participate in the trip.
On all 2022 domestic Custom/Private trips:
- We mirror the regional COVID guidelines of the destination(s) through which we travel.
- As of May 2022, we do NOT require vaccination against COVID-19 to participate in a Custom trip in the United States, we do strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance, as COVID-related issues are not an exception to our cancellation policies.
- All travelers understand they are purchasing, and participating in travel during a global pandemic event, and assume all associated risks.
Our policies will continue to evolve as new information is available. Please check back as your trip date approaches or contact your Adventure Coordinator.
Preparing for your Adventure
From the very start of your adventure, we want to ensure that you have a good understanding of all aspects of your upcoming trip, including the health and safety protocols we’ve implemented.
We review the sanitation protocols for each of our accommodations and work only with those accommodations that abide by enhanced sanitation and distancing standards.
We follow the required sanitation protocols put into place by local government agencies, including restrictions on the number of guests per vehicle. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer will be available on transfer vehicles. Masks will be worn when there is a group transfer or shuttle. We clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces in common areas daily, including vehicle seats, door handles, and steering wheels.
At our welcome orientation, we will provide the space to answer questions, address safety on the trip, and enjoy getting to know each other. All guests will have already supplied proof of full vaccination and will have followed the necessary protocols for entering the country (for overseas travel).
Part of the joy of traveling in small groups is the camaraderie. While this will still remain a key part of the trip, it may look a bit different. Guests and guides will be expected to wear masks when distancing is not possible, and we’ll minimize passing any material such as food, documents, or trekking poles. And we’ll seek more space within the group as well as in the places we visit. MT Sobek has always been known for our exceptional local guides who take you where others don’t. And yes, high-fives after a summit will be allowed—they’ll now be “air-fives”!
Our guides are all trained in First Aid, CPR, and other safety protocols and have a procedure to follow in case of any health issues. They are also trained under the new health standards we have adopted. They will wear face coverings whenever necessary and in accordance with local guidelines. All of our guides are fully vaccinated.
Our guides have extensive knowledge of the region as many of them are native to the area you are visiting. They are well versed in local customs, know the best times to visit iconic locations to avoid crowds, and are able to identify local clinics to take you if you’re feeling ill or showing any concerning symptoms. They are excellent communicators and have access to our office team 24/7 to help manage any logistics needed to alter or enhance your trip.
Food Preparation & Handling
As always, alcohol-based hand sanitizer will be available at meals and our guides will continue to prepare food to the highest standards of food safety. We will not share snacks (e.g. trail mix from one bag, shared chocolate bar, etc.), and will instead provide individual snack options for each guest.
Tents, backpacks, sleeping pads, trekking poles, and any gear for individual use will be labeled and assigned for the duration of the trip. At the conclusion of the trip, any personal equipment will be sprayed with sanitizer and let dry in direct sunlight before returning to the tent bag. Guests will be required to bring their own sleeping bag liners if not using their own sleeping bag. Sleeping bags will be washed and dried in a commercial dryer using the hot setting. Water filters will be sanitized before and after use. Food will be prepared and served by one or two guides and others will avoid the kitchen area. Guides will wash their hands and put on face coverings prior to meal prep. Meal preparation will occur in an open-air area rather than a shelter when possible. Meals will not be served in a self-serve buffet-style offering. All dishes and utensils will be cleaned with boiling water each evening.
Our Commitment to You

Keeping You Informed
MT Sobek’s response to COVID-19 is subject to change in accordance with the recommendations and requirements of the CDC, U.S. and international government agencies. We frequently update resources like our Re-openings and Requirements page but please contact your Adventure Coordinator or visit the CDC or US Embassy pages for the most current information.
Small Group Travel
For over 50 years, MT Sobek has believed in small group adventures. We keep our groups small–averaging 10 people or less–so that you can benefit from the individual care and attention of our guide team, and be allowed more space to move about. We’ll enforce a lower cap on our group size where necessary to accommodate spacing in vehicles or on boats to allow for social distancing.
Prefer to travel only with your own pod? No problem. Our travel experts create custom-tailored private adventures in North America and internationally. Perfect for families, couples, and friend groups, MT Sobek’s custom and private adventures are designed and operated to our highest standards—you’ll be in the best hands with the very best adventure guides on the planet. Let’s get started!

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if MT Sobek postpones my trip because of COVID-19 travel restrictions?
If we need to postpone a trip because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, your Adventure Coordinator will contact you with more information specific to your trip. In most cases, you will be given the following options*:
• Transfer to a future departure
• 100% credit to use towards a future trip, less any penalties by hotels or local service providers that we are unable to recoup
• A full refund of your trip costs, less any penalties by lodging providers (hotels, inns, rifugios) or local service providers that we are unable to recoup. We will endeavor to recover and refund as much money as possible in good faith in light of these circumstances
*Please note that certain trips including Special Departures, Private Trips, Custom Trips, boat-based journeys, and trips with permits booked in advance may have a different policy. Please reach out to your Adventure Coordinator for details. Some Future Travel Credits are tied to specific lodging and services and cannot be applied to other lodging and services. Future Travel Credits are not eligible for a refund.
What happens if I decide to postpone my trip even though MT Sobek is still planning to operate the trip?
All MT Sobek guests are subject to the payment and cancellation terms agreed to at the time of reservation. This includes any guest who opts to cancel an operable trip due to COVID-19. Please refer to your invoice for the terms and conditions that apply to your booking. We recommend that all guests purchase insurance.
Will my guides be vaccinated?
Yes, we require all guides leading trips in 2022 to be fully vaccinated.
Can you tell me if everyone on my trip is vaccinated?
We require that adult guests get vaccinated before traveling with us on all scheduled group departures and international Custom/Private adventures. Custom/Private groups traveling in the USA are not required to be fully vaccinated.
What if someone has symptoms on trip?
We have a robust internal protocol in place to safely address any COVID-19 related situations. If someone experiences symptoms on trip, they are asked to let the Adventure Guides know immediately. The Adventure Guides will ask the symptomatic person to isolate from the group and help facilitate a COVID-19 test. If the test is negative, no further action will be taken. Read more.
What if someone tests positive for COVID-19 on trip?
Following our internal protocol and the guidance of the CDC, if a member of the group tests positive, we will ask the individual to exit the trip and follow CDC isolation guidelines. We may also ask any travel partner(s) (if sharing a room) to exit the trip for the well-being of the greater group. Your Adventure Guides will help facilitate as well as share next steps with the other members of the group who may have been in close contact with the individual who tested positive. Read more.
If I’m quarantined during or after the trip, who will pay for my accommodations?
Additional services required for quarantining during or after the trip, including accommodations, meals, transfers, medical care and COVID-19 testing, are at the expense of the traveler. We recommend that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance package prior to your trip that includes quarantine coverage.
What if the country’s entry policy changes after final payment?
At the time of booking, your MT Sobek trip destination(s) may currently have entry restrictions due to COVID. We are hopeful the situation will change, and they will be open at the time of your travel. By placing a deposit and/or final payment on this departure you agree to our full Terms & Conditions and understand that if MT Sobek must cancel or postpone a trip due to force majeure (war, labor strikes, wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, epidemic, a major world event adversely affecting international travel patterns, etc.), MT Sobek will provide a future travel credit or in some cases, refund the portion of the trip cost that is recoverable after using good faith efforts to recover payments already advanced to suppliers (hotels, transportation companies, etc.)
MT Sobek does not guarantee recovery of any or all of the advance payments made, and our use of good faith efforts to recover these payments will not include the institution of any legal proceedings in foreign jurisdictions. MT Sobek is not responsible for expenses incurred by trip members in preparing for a canceled or postponed trip (e.g., non-refundable purchase of air tickets, visa fees, inoculations, equipment, etc.) or for any additional arrangements should the trip member depart prior to the scheduled group departure date.
